I just pray she can forgive us and chooses to come back after the way we have treated her. It would be hard to blame her for not wanting to come back.

Interesting conundrum. What if Russia said if you serve your sentence of a year or two in prison you could return to your million dollar Russian b-ball gig, but if you leave via a prisoner swap you can never come back?

Frankly if she got eaten by a shark, it wouldn't bother me.

What about if SHARK does?

I can't get over normal and healthy she looks. anyone I've seen get locked up for an extended period (more than a weekend) always looks noticeably worse for the experience. Griner looks like she's still kicking it in Phoenix, probably working out all she wants to and getting 5 star meals catered to her cell.

If Griner goes back to playing in Russia, then NAS was right: she's in cahoots with the Russians. Beyond Griner looking content and healthy, the team she plays for is the pet project of not one but 2 of those 96 Russian oligarchs the US identified as most influential in Russia: Andrei Kozitsyn and Iskander Makhmudov.
So Putin's going to unilaterally stomp all over a couple of his multi-billionaire buddies vanity WNBA project?

And then there's this substack, published 4 days before Griner's arrest:

Image

So after Moscow was rattling sabers for weeks to work out a swap for Viktor Bout ("Boot"), Griner flies back into Russia against State Department recommendations with the Russian military gathered at the Ukrainian border on the eve of war carrying weed vapes? Hmmm

She doesn't know how she accidentally packed the drugs.

KHIMKI, Russia (AP) — U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner was convicted Thursday in Russia of drug possession and sentenced to nine years in prison following a politically charged trial that came amid soaring tensions between Moscow and Washington over Ukraine and could lead to a high-stakes prisoner exchange between the two world powers.

The 31-year-old Griner, a two-time U.S. Olympic champion and a eight-time all-star with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury listened with a blank expression as an interpreter translated the verdict by Judge Anna Sotnikova. The judge also fined her 1 million rubles (about $16,700) fine.

She got 9 years today.

The Russians are going to be pushing for some of their high level criminals in return.

This is kind of like the plot of Air Force One but a lot less believable.

And why is Marc Fogel (white male), convicted of bringing in half an ounce of medical marijuana and sentenced to 14 years, not ahead of Griner in line? These assholes claiming Griner was arrested because she's a black gay woman are sickening. Clearly she's being given preferential treatment, at least as far as effort.

She was arrested because she's a celebrity who happens to be black and gay. Russia understands the current politics of our country. We wouldn't have given a shit 15 to 20 years ago. This is also why I believe she's an agent of the Russian government. She looks younger than she did before she got arrested. Stress doesn't do that to you.

It's going to be great when she returns to Russia next year to play in the Russian mafia women's basketball league.

The racial angle only works in America - that's what the people making the black/gay claim don't get, they're globalizing a domestic framework of thinking. It assumes other countries understand these issues - or even have those issues - the same way Americans do.

I see it as Russia trying to extract as much as they can get. Griner's race and gender will be weaponized against Biden - the framing is he must work to free Griner or it'll be suggested he's a racist homophobe. He probably won't, but he must treat all cases equally regardless of domestic identity politics.

It's because LeBron will only subsidize a $300k salary for her.

In cases where citizens are wrongfully/politically detained overseas (Griner ain't the only one as we know) it sort of provides a litmus test for the state of one's concern for your fellow compatriots. Like if Majorie Taylor Green was wrongfully detained/imprisoned overseas AOC should be advocating for her release as part of her role in government. And on the flip side of AOC were detained Green should be doing the same kind of advocacy, even though both are bitter political enemies of one another. You have to set that aside.

The Griner thing is being politicized and that's just not right. After war and other things, wrongful/politicized detainment of a fellow citizen is like the one thing that theoretically should unite people.

That's true.

It will be interesting to see what Griner comes back saying though. She should be the biggest fan of the United States for the rest of her life after this.

There's a lot of ignorant people who will blame the US for her situation. Hopefully she doesn't fall into that group but wouldn't be surprised.

Being shown what true repression looks like as opposed to I was followed around a store might wake her up but I doubt it.

I think it’d be kinda funny if she blamed Zelensky and his army of Wekrainian Nazis.

I see ESPN2 is currently showing his 2 sons playing in some European Cup game. Bronnie had a rough start.

Supposedly his youngest son has more potential than Bronnie.

that's gotta be kinda weird for the kids, to have your career more or less mapped out for you when you're born. What if they didn't want to play basketball.

I found the roster, and see he is 2 years younger. Anfernee Hardaway's kid is playing for this team along with Pippen's kid.

I think they both wanted to play. What sucks is knowing that you will never be as great as your father, regardless of how good you are or how hard you work.
