Under-bidding the competition by 50 million in guaranteed dollars isn't going to land you top-tier free agents, especially when the payoff is only $20 million and is contingent on doing something fewer than 20 3B/SS have done in the expansion era.

They weren't serious about winning these sweepstakes.

Sox fans have really shocked me with their insensitive comments. Antisemetic tropes like "screwing people in negotiations" or "pocketing money"

More money per year and an incentive to make much more. Always suspect of a player who is afraid to bet on himself.

There is no way in hell I would bet on myself. Take that money and half-ass it for the next decade.

All things being relatively equal both money and team competitiveness-wise, would you rather live and work in San Diego or Chicago 7 months year ? Could be as simple as that

At least the option requirement was something realistic and not something like having to win the Triple Crown.

I think a player who would risk $50 million to make an extra $20 million is idiotic.

Failing to see how offering a person $250M guaranteed is cheap.

I'm glad we "lost" out.

Don't need a me guy, we need a leader.

Your turn will be here soon Eloy.

But imagine the proposition is a coin flip, not doing something that only a handful of infielders have done in the last 50 years of the game. In this scenario, the player is asked to risk earning $50 million in the hopes that he could make an extra $20 million. His expected value in this situation is -$15 million.

 come on. That's a level of disingenuous thinking I only thought BRick could achieve. They knew what the price of admission was and they tried to undercut it. That's cheap.

More $ per year and this would have been the most lucrative contract ever offered to a Chicago athlete and the third highest contract ever in professional sports.

Yeah, real cheap

The answer is BOTH Eloy and Machado.
The Sox will never find themselves in this situation again....your choice of 2 26 yr elite FA with no one standing in your way. Payroll was cleared of bad money and the arrow was totally pointing up.

I agree with everyone that he's not worth it. That doesn't matter. Manny may not be worth it, but WINNING is worth it. Sometimes that's just what it takes.

Jeff Passan said it best. If you're IN on a guy, then be IN on a guy. Many of us were blind-sided on this one because we were TOLD times were different. The waiting game should have been a very clear indicator that the Sox were losing out. San Diego said screw it....we're doing this.

Bravo, San Diego. I'm a fan. Not because you overpaid for Machado. I'm a fan because your seeing the big picture. That's what winners do. You want something, you're confident it's the right thing to do for the future, and you make it happen.

They offered a legit contract. And I can’t blame them for having triggers towards the end that require a certain level of performance. This isn’t the NFL where contracts can be mitigated. You can probably make a lot of arguments for the Sox being cheap, but this isn’t one of those times.

C'mon people. You don't go into Nordstrom's and offer $2000 for a coat with a $2500 tag on it. The price is $2500. You get ZERO credit for offering $2000. In fact you get labeled as a fucking idiot.

There are no price tags on FA’s. I am not giving them credit. I am simply saying that cheap is a bad label here.

No. No. No. No, it was not legit.
Manny's camp all along said the price was $300 Million. This wasn't a big secret. THere's nothing legit about being $50 Million under market value.

Jerry and many others clearly felt that's wasn't his market. San Diego came in and said "yes it is". If not San Diego, someone else would have dne it.

Bryce Harper will now get his market, which will be in the 10 yr $330 Million range.
