My proms were fun, but I wouldn't have cared if my school and community didn't make prom a big deal. A shitload of money is invested on you getting dressed up to hangout with people you see every day and possibly have sex with someone you likely already had sex with. Never went to prom...but historical context is important...

In 1979 I was a junior in HS....dating a lovely young woman from New Trier West for two years...she was on the pill with her mother's consent...(tremendous time, albeit difficult in traveling to see her from the northwest suburbs)...anyway, had I even suggested the idea of prom to her she would've broken up with me in a second...late 70's "The Prom" was not a thing, at all...in fact, quite the opposite...fortunately sex and drugs were quite the fashion Damn fine trade off if you ask me
