Last night we went to a bar with a few other couples. There was a trivia or music thing going on but that's not why we were there. Anyway, with a few minutes left they turned off the basketball games and put on the cubs game. Most people in the crowd wanted it changed back. The bartender said no and the reason was because whoever was running the trivia thing was a big cubs fan and it's opening day. After a few yells and comments, a few tables closed out their tabs and left. Odd vibe for the rest of the evening. WITA?

That’s horrible. People literally were at that bar to watch the tournament. For the bar not to realize that is amazing.

All the tvs had to be cubs? How many did they have?

I was traveling in Western Canada several years ago with coworkers who were from Cleveland. Both were big Indians fans and they were in the playoffs so we went to a sports bar to watch the game. A few innings in they switched all the TVs over to a hockey game. When we requested that they keep the baseball game on at least one TV they told us no. We ended up going back to the hotel and watching it in the lobby with me (the disinterested party) serving them beers from the adjacent bar.

So the turned off the one basketball game they had on for opening day on the one TV they have? I'd rather watch March madness than Cubs baseball, but it's not that egregious.

Sounds like this trivia emcee was a pretty big deal.

Well, if they only had one TV then it wasn't a sports bar obviously. So anyone going there had to know that. It's a little understandable now.

I don't get how any bar can exist now a days without at least 20 TVs.

It's one of those tiny wine bar places so no not for sports but they usually have whatever game is on, on. You had some trivia or whatever people there too. Some people will sit for 4 hours some people come in for a drink. It's groups of women or couples typically. What stuck me was the lack of hospitality by both the bartender and the emcee and now that I think about it they both seemed very Julyish.

I've got no beef with trivia contests in general, but there is an appropriate place and time for them. I've never lost the Chicago History Podcast contest. He does it in places where it's going to be the thing that draws the crowd.

Do you really want to run trivia against the Tournament or the Cubs opener? I was watching the Illini at O'Donovan's last week and the obnoxious booming voice of the guy running trivia forced me to leave the bar rather than staying to watch the next set of games.

Why are you going to a bar to watch a basketball game with only 1 TV, sounds like the Douchebag is misplaced?

For a 5 point bonus, name me any year that Ludvig van Beethoven was alive.

I guessed 1789. Just a French Revolution thing.

Amen -- imagine encountering pretentious waitstaff in a cozy wine bar? Even Nostradamus would have been surprised by that!
