YOur reception rule sucks. Dez catches the ball in the air, lands, and takes three steps while INTENTIONALLY diving for the goal line. NFL says thats not a catch. Dez Bryant and players like him him are too good for that rule. They have the ability to make a football move instantly.

NFL BLEW THIS ONE.

The frustrating thing about the NFL is that they try to be so clinically precise with rules like this, yet most of the game is played with refs calling (or not calling) holding on a whim and making other judgment calls that are arbitrary and not reviewable.

The NFL must review their entire rule book & the way the game is officiated because the current state of affairs can not continue. Fans, players, owners, gamblers & the TV networks will become more & more disgruntled with the league. Also, breaking up the referee crews in favor of "all star" referee crews for the playoffs is just a bad bad idea.

Roger Goodell should be fired by the owners at the end of this shit show of a season.

couldn't reaching for the goaline be deemed a football move?... or do you have to have possession then make a football move. It's a shame that was an incredible catch.... i still remember sitting int he stands thinking WTF when they announced the calvin catch was not a catch in 2010

While we are bound to discuss rules after the game yesterday I would like to add a couple things. I do not want this ground can't cause a fumble crap. Also I am done with the breaking the plane BS. Either get in the damn end zone or not. Get a foot in the corner or jump over the pile ala Payton. No more plane of anything.

and yet the ball clearly hit the ground on Cobb's late 2Q reception but hat is rule a catch.

That wasn't a catch, and neither was the play in yesterday's game.

the rule seems bad. i'd really like to know why they implemented this process stuff. there has to be some purpose for it.

but in the end, everything that dez does from the time he catches the ball to the time it hits the ground is the "process" of making the catch since momentum took him to the ground. since that was the case per the rule, its not a catch.

That's exactly right. The entire game is determined by what the refs feel like calling.

couldn't you say that about any sport ? Wide/narrow strike zone in baseball, calling fouls/"letting them play" in basketball, etc.

not to the degree of football. umpires don't take guys off bases, move them back, award free bases. Call ground rule doubles on popups.

Yep that is right, Eric Gregg never widened the strike zone for the Braves pitchers back in the day.

so you remember something 20 years ago because it was so bizarre.

phantom pass interference calls happen in every NFL game. 3rd on 10 on your own 35 now 1st and 10 on the other team's 25. Yeah, that doesn't effect the game much.

Things in all sports happen, there are phantom fouls called every night in basketball that effect sports, this is not just a football issue.

Here is what makes absolutely no sense. You have the "process of the catch" which causes the incomplete ruling for Dez Bryan't play. Then you have Josh Cribbs get hit and lose the ball, yet he is ruled down by contact. So there is no "process of the catch" when fielding a punt or a kick, but there is for a pass that is caught? Just so stupid...

100% agree. I thought this was the most egregious call (or non call) of the game. That play was even reviewed! It was clear from every angle that the ball hit the ground. Funny how the last two 'playoff' wins for the Packers have been aided with very, very poor referee calls (Cobb and Bryant yesterday, and the pass/fumble against the Bears in week 17 last year)

While this is true, the NFL has their own standard of bad.
When you need to have a replay expert in Mike Prereira (sp?) it's time to evaluate what you have done to the game.

I don't care how successful they are, the NFL has become a bad product. I still watch my team, but over the years I invest less and less and less. Baseball and Hockey aren't perfect and perhaps they are on their way to a level of bad like the NFL, but they're not there yet. The NFL sucks.

I believe they all have their issues, I take it for what it is worth, entertainment.

If watching people take years off of their lives for your entertainment doesn't make you quit watching the NFL, who cares about some stupid rules?

At one point in humanity, "entertainment" consisted of watching people being eaten by Lions.

I think the facemask would prevent Suh from doing that.

Other way around though wasnt it?

Lots of references to a huge strikezone for Livan Hernandez in 97 ALCS

Maybe I don't remember it correctly, but Gregg's strike zone was HUGE for the Braves pitchers back in the day.

He had a HUGE one in general I guess. Just a coincidence that the most famous one was AGAINST the Braves

Maybe he was overcompensating
