So, Stern's opinion is, it's impossible to build a following with a podcast?

That's pretty stupid.

It's pretty damn impossible to build one to the point of fame unless you're already known for something or affiliated with some station somebody knows like NPR.

I'm not bashing podcasts, that's basically all I listen to, but a lot of the ones that I've liked that had a pretty good following eventually failed.

There are a million reasons why Howard is a DB, but this isn't one of them. Ari Shaffir sounds like a baby.

AGT is a garbage show, however.

I didnt hear Stern give that condition.

But all that is changing anyway. It's just a different medium. Of course the King of Old Media doesnt like it.

What about these Youtube stars with huge followings?

But he's wrong about having to go on terrestrial radio to become famous. Podcasts are not totally there yet, but its definitely possible to build a following.

Carolla has a big audience because he was already famous. This guy isn't going to make it doing a podcast.

Podcasting is a saturated market, no doubt. If you have a successful podcast though, you're most likely doing other things. Rogan wouldn't be selling out theaters if it wasn't for the Joe Rogan Experience. Ari wouldn't have a show (This is Not Happening) on Comedy Central (plus an hour stand-up special debuting tomorrow night) without touring around the country + world, being a guest on so many Rogan podcasts, and then creating his own (Ari Shaffir's Skeptic Tank). Howard sounded butthurt yesterday. Can't he have any one of his numerous writers or producers look up Ari Shaffir on Google to see what he does and how successful his podcast is? The internet is a cool thing. He's afraid of it killing radio.

I certainly wasnt thinking of Carolla and Im not endorsing Ari Shaffir. (He sucks, although he's already known in comedy circles. Certainly not the nobody Howard made him out to be)

Im saying it can and has been done by others.

Part of Howard's argument is the ratings tell the story. Well so do the downloads. It just makes no sense.

Carolla just seemed like the best example, because he has such a successful podcast.

Probably not by guys who rant about Howard Stern on other people's podcasts, which was Howard's point.

How many podcasts get huge numbers of downloads? I'm asking because I don't know.

Howard is right and wrong. The thing he's wrong about is, people aren't in podcasting to get a career in broadcasting (typically).

Typically they just do it to further another career (comedy, acting, etc).

He's right about it generally not being a career option, though. For the vast majority it isn't, and for the guys it is (Kevin Smith, Carolla), it's because like Dr Ken said, they already have a following.

Well, I heard the beginning of Howard's rant about guys who are already known. So Carolla is out.

I didnt listen to the whole thing, but I took Howard's words at the beginning of the rant at face value. There were no qualifiers. Just that you cant build a new audience podcasting.

A lot of them do, but the point is, they are judged. The DL's serve as the ratings. Howard seemed to be saying that Terrestrial radio is better because you are judged against your peers (ratings)

Same is true with podcasts (Albeit, Itunes ratings can be skewed, but the actual download numbers are the numbers)

And were also still in the infancy stage of podcasting. Its only gonna get bigger

Also, there is no question that Ari being on Rogan's podcast and having his own helps his career. I wouldnt even know he was without that exposure. (this is a different argument, but just saying Shafir has benefitted greatly from podcasting)

Right now that is mostly the case. But its going the way of being as viable as radio.

Carolla's podcast spun off of doing mornings on Stern's old CBS affiliates, didn't it? Wasn't there some deal where morning drive was split between Carolla in the west and David Lee Roth in the east?

You are correct. And the Midwest got some idiot named Rover, who was from Cleveland.

I get the point that podcasts are in their infancy, but I also get Stern's point about building an audience and how it leads to bigger opportunities.

Stern got pissed because this nobody said some unflattering things about him. I loved every second of Stern's diatribe. I miss his show but can't justify paying for radio.

I thought there was an agreement never to speak of Rover again.

Yes. I knew he was a comedian. Pretty sure he was also a radio host on Air America, too.

I'm still one of many who was first introduced to him from his podcast. He's a terrific interviewer and I enjoy his show on Netflix. All Howard pointed out yesterday is that he makes a million bigillion more dollars than Ari Shaffir because Ari Shaffir is a loser and doesn't do anything else besides podcasting and the internet + podcasts + smart phones won't help you to gain a following. He's an old naive douche.

Yes, but Carrolla was never in question. I mean he obviously was known before the podcast

I think I had maybe heard of Maron, but his audience was built on podcasting

Did not know that, only listen to Rogan occasionally

I know him as the guy Rogan used to get Mencia. (Shaffir used to open for Mencia and of course Mencia stole his jokes later)
