Jeff Buckley was the opening, opening, opening, act for Soundgarden in 1994 at Summerfest. I'm not saying he was better, but I had never heard of him and he blew me away.

Foals was much better than Silversun Pickups - May 2016

I was a huge Soundgarden fan at the time and I was there, but we missed Buckley and most of TAD.
I made up for it by meeting Jeff at Metro. He was playing the early show and my band played the late show that night, so my GF and I brought all my shit to Metro and left it in my car while Buckley played. It's a miracle no one broke into my ride.

I can picture that.

I did not realize that Appetite for Destruction had been released for a year before gaining widespread attention. Seems hard to believe.

Pretty sure Pretty Hate Machine by NIN and Nothing's Shocking by Jane's Addiction also took about a year to really catch on.

True.
You can also add New Miserable Experience and PJ Ten to the list of albums that baked a while before getting popular.

I saw Soundgarden open for Skid Row.....Soundgarden def put on a better show.

I did not see it but my friend did at the Amphitheater I want to say. Van Halen's first ever tour was opening for Black Sabbath. I think they stopped that half way through or something due to blowing them away.

pizza_Place: Il Forno in Deerfield!
Neville Brothers at a Santana Concert at Poplar Creek back in mid 80s (first time I smoked pot)

Ani DiFranco at Bob Dylan concert back in mid 90s.

Living Color at Rolling Stones concert at Alpine Valley late 80s.

All 3 of those I went just to see the opening act.
