Love or hate Slash's fills and solos in his entire oeuvre. I can hardly make a case for any fill or lead besides this moment. I say.......as a player. A Gibson has never sounded better. Than whatever he found on that day to bless those tracks with. Melodic. Taut. Expansive. Not unlike Robbie or Jimi or say even Antonio Jobim on their best days. Slash SERVED that song properly. Not with mastubatory pyrotechnichs. Just.....ascension. And respect. |

I think Slash is a great melodic hard rock player. He’s nowhere near the Les Paul Mt Rushmore though. |

But Mt Rushmore discussions with such things are extremely subjective. Slash at the very least should be in the team photo/discussion. |

Not Jimmy Page or even Pete who KNEW how to talk back and forth to his Gibson when needed, or badass fuckin Billy Gibbons on the entire Tres Hombres or Fandango live album just killing that LP tone. Or Duane kissing each fret like a lover in any Allmans early joint. Im saying....Just that particular lead. He IMHO caught how that guitar sounds at its sweetest. Allow me to make an argument. Frampton Comes Alive. A very nice artifact of a place and a time. Nothing mind blowing musically. But the tone that he got, love it or hate it again....was how that axe was supposed to be heard. As opposed to a Fender Telecaster, (my particular fave for ease of neck glide and Stones Aerosmith 70s riffage.) I think the proper thread for my reply should have been Gibson tone lovers forum. Per this thread.....Just that Slash on that day......Had the right tool in his hand to express.......like sheets of rain...........his melodious tale. |
