Hootie and the Blowfish "Cracked Rear View" had a lot of hit songs, got a lot of play and sold a lot of copies. Nothing they ever did after that approached that level of success.

Like Jagged Little Pill, this one also has to be in the conversation....it was a huge debut album

Van Halen's debut was huge for guitar players, but I don't think it had the gravitas as Ten or Appetite.

Also, what does "best" mean? most albums sold?

Jagged Little Pill isn't even on this list...

VH is at 20 million in sales. Ten....considerably less.

Don't get me wrong....Ten is in my team photo, but I think AFD wins that particular battle.

How many did they sell the year of the debut? I didn't own VH1 until 10 years after it was released.

Bat out of Hell is at 21.7M but nobody considers that a "best" album on any list.

Norah Jones' Come Away with Me has to get a mention if you're going to throw in Jagged Little Pill. Each sold roughly 30 million copies. I sort of can buy Jaw Breaker's argument for Jagged Little Pill being her real debut album, but Jones' Come Away with Me was literally the 1st album she put out.

This argument goes about the same as any “best” list. Whoever said it should have many many great song. Sell a lot and perhaps have grammys. The last I don’t care about much.

AFD is a lot of filler to me. 10 is better. Many other 90s albums are no better than the Blues Traveler one.

The album won 8 Grammy Awards and is the 3rd best-selling debut album of all time.

Great album for the suburban white woman crowd. My ex was totally into that album. I couldn't stay awake when listening to it. Solid Lilith Fair contribution, though.

Award shows are stupid. See: Awards, Peabody

As far as the sales thing goes, it's hard to say that sales = quality...I mean, there is a lot of shit out there (Backstreet Boys, that Bieber kid, etc) that sell a lot of records, but are also complete shit.

Really surprised how much I considered "License to Ill," probably because of how much Paul's Boutique eclipses it, but I'd go with the Violent Femmes debut.

Don't I know it. I had an ex-girlfriend that plays it way too much. Dreck.

I completely understand Norah Jones putting you to sleep. Bill Evans puts some people to sleep but I fucking love the guy. I hang on every note.

Look, Norah Jones definitely hits white women a certain way  but plenty of men listen to her as well. Just like plenty of men listen to Alanis Morissette or Lauren HIll.

Jones really knows how to play the piano and she's got a beautiful voice. Come Away with Me sold 27 million copies. That's the 3rd best-selling debut album in the history of the world. To say it's a solid Lilith Fair contribution is bizarre.

I remember an interview with the Beastie Boys a long time ago where they said they found it amusing how many people would tell them Paul’s Boutique was the best record they ever made, since it was their worst-selling album.

I don't care about sales....Paul's Boutique is easily their best album.
I'm sorry, Licensed To Ill has not aged well for me. No Sleep 'til Brooklyn and Paul Revere are about the only ones I can stomach. The rest is absolute garbage.

Considered by many to be the best album in the genre's history.

I didn't realize that was his debut.

Yea. He had been a feature on a couple things before then, but that was his first album.

A lot of rappers had their best albums on their debut, probably true of most genre's though.

A case could be made for Biggie- Ready to Die, Jay-Z Reasonable Doubt or Raekwon and Ghostface Only Built 4 Cuban Linx but I think Illmatic takes the prize.

you have your entire life up to that point to write and record your 1st album. this is why we have sophomore slumps.

And why it took Tom Scholz a decade to make two albums after the debut. Not everyone can pump out albums every six months like Elton John.

Great call.

Also, I can't find out who mentioned it, but The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was an interesting suggestion. But is that album and Ten really debut albums, because they were in acts before? Apologies if someone brang this point up before, but I can't find my reading glasses. Pretty Hate Machine and My Aim is True were good.

So, I've been thinking about this. All the albums we are listing, how many of you feel that the debut is the bands best album? Or like top 2-3.

clearly if you are part of the thing when it's happening, you would feel differently than if you discovered something 5, 10, 15, 20 years later, yes?
