Greg Solk is doing great work there. The heavier, tighter modern-alternative rotation was killing them. They have a library again!

Yep. Play list upgrade of epic proportions. Maybe a little 'oldie' heavy, but not entirely. I am not against new or pop music. Just don't beat me with that stuff.

I think the ideal programming cycle would be seven songs in which you have:

2 songs from the new rotation. How many songs would be available in the rotation, I don't know, but more than when it was X Ambassadors six times a day
3 general library cuts
1 "signature" XRT artist
1 live from the archives, deep cut, free DJ pick from outside the "available" pool

Hell yes "Waiting for the Man" played a few minutes ago.

Honestly, I don't know why this station needs a program director and a music director when the tenured DJs could act as a committee of de facto music directors. Lin, Terri, and Marty surely have a better feel for what the station should be doing than some nobody fresh out of Clear Channel.

I did have to laugh at the disgust and resignation in their voices when introing Adele.

Oh shit we're getting some The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads

God I love the metronome pop as the 33 spins. Catching it as the song dies brings back serious memories.

Did XRT change their sound equipment? The music sounds much better (fuller bass, perhaps some EQ) than it used to.

They probably tinkered with the processing, yeah, but I never had an issue with it. I remember reading somewhere (probably the Steve Hoffman boards years ago) that Norm was a stickler for not adding dynamic compression like other stations do, so if anything, it probably sounds worse now. Like WFMT and WDCB, it tended to be a lot softer, so if you wander over from the music-nerd stations into, say, the Loop or Q101, you realize you have to dial the volume down. I can't listen over the air right now so I can't say for sure.

They've also made some subtle imaging changes that most people would never notice.

Destroyer by the Kinks. Haven't heard that on the dial since the 80's. Keep the randomly awesome tunes coming.

I still remembered the majority of lyrics. Where is a stupid human brain gratification thread.

Heard "Brick" by Ben Folds Five this morning which really caught me off guard. I'm pretty sure "Brick" was the first Serious Rock song I ever loved, so that was cool. Norm must have had a No Ben Folds policy for the last 12 years.

Still too much Cage the Elephant and The Record Company (a scientific experiment to create the world's most batting-practice-fastball-down-the-middle rock band?) but they're drawing me back in. Station was damn near unlistenable for the last year or so.

Is Dave Grohl in The Record Company? I'm sure they'll have a long career playing Cub Opening Days at Yak-zies.

Nirvana's been one of my favorite bands since forever, and all I can say is that Dave Grohl is kind of a tool.

No. The Record Company is the kind of band that should be playing Monday nights at FitzGerald's.

The Record Company is for people who find the Black Keys a little too experimental.

The Record Company is for people who find the Black Keys a little too experimental.

This is from their Wiki:

The Record Company is an American power trio rock band formed in Los Angeles. The members are Chris Vos (guitar, lead vocals), Alex Stiff (bass, backing vocals), and Mark Cazorla (drums, backing vocals). Their music is influenced by blues musicians like John Lee Hooker,[1] early punk bands like The Stooges, and rock bands like The Rolling Stones. Their sound incorporates slide guitar, distorted bass, a Ludwig drum kit and the vocals of Chris Vos, who grew up on a Wisconsin dairy farm.

The last line is precious. Also, I don't hear any of those influences. They sound like Train if Train was pretending to be a bunch of tough guys.

They're influenced by blues musicians insofar as they play flatted thirds and sevenths.

Cmon, Fitzgerald's? I know music is subjective but Spiegals band belongs in Fitzgerald's..not the record company. I suppose you think Nate Ratcliff n the night sweats belong in Fitzgerald's too?

Now they're running liners calling themselves "the station for serious music lovers" in hushed tones. Sounds just like the Drive circa 2003, no surprise.

 I love 312player and BF5 equally.

I saw Peter Wolf at Fitzgerald's like 15 years ago.

Phenomenal show.
