All I know if that I refused to give his music the time of day because of that fucking "Trouble" song that was in some corny Subaru TV ad or whatever every 5 minutes a few years ago. I've seen him I think once since on one of the late night shows and the song he played and his voice were outstanding. There's just other stuff I could be listening to that prevents me from delving any further, but I don't hate him anymore now.

His last few albums haven't really been my cup of tea but his first 4 albums are very solid. Nothing to be ashamed of if you enjoy it IMO

This. My wife is a bigfan of his so I get to hear him a lot. Like TBone said, some of his recent stuff is very 'soyish', for lack of a better word. There are some good tunes on his early albums though.

You can find better than him, but you can also do a lot worse...... Dance Gavin Dance.
