For aficionados only. It would be hard to do it by year, let alone pick the best of all-time. So give your top 5.

1. MSG 1971
2. Tokyo 9/23/71, 1st Show in Japan
3. MSG 7/28/73, 2nd night at the Garden
4. Blueberry Hill 1970
5. Earl's Court 5/24/75, 4th Night

I had a bootleg of #5. I have no idea where it went.

Final night at MSG, 1973 is great. Plant was in his best voice of the whole American tour. The version of Stairway is majestic, but sadly, has never been released in soundboard quality. For me, the 2nd night is a little better because of the superb versions of TSRTS, TRS and No Quarter, which all were on the Song Remains the Same album.

I like the version of Thank You from Southhampton. Great stuff.

In my opinion anything to do with The Song Remains the Same can't be their best concert. I was not really impressed as a youth. Or maybe I was simply being contrarian because so many tried to preach it as the best thing of all time. Either way the stuff I heard from the How the West Was Won or whatever sounded better.

Is Knebworth the last one on How the West was Won? They look like they going out to a disco or a wedding reception after the show.

Plant's voice changed between 1970 and 1971 and the Song Remain the Same Concerts at MSG in July of 73. He couldn't hit the high notes anymore and when he tried, it cracked. But as a band, they made great strides musically. Page's playing in '73 was more lyrical, his improvisations were magical (maybe even literally), which shows on songs like Since I've Been Loving You, No Quarter and Stairway. Their playing on Dazed hit its peak in '73, especially with the arrangement of "San Francisco" and the eerie Bow Section, during those dates. Pittsburgh from a few nights earlier might be better, but the recording is a little rough. The bow section is really haunting with Plant wailing in accompaniment.

Yeah, so a song like Over the Hills from How the West Was Won does sound better, because Plant's vocals were still pretty good in '72 at LA. But I wouldn't consider that a better concert than some of the American '73 shows. The '71 shows are superior to the '72 shows, except for the two shows at Nassau which were really good, high energy concerts.

HTWWW was a live cd. Do you mean the DVD, where Page has the blue long sleeve shirt, and Plant has the disco button up polka dot shirt?

Yes. The fashion trends of 1979 were on full display during those shows, as demonstrated in this publicty photo for Knebworth

Plant's voice did degrade by '73. Song Remains the Same is really carried by the other three band members. That doesn't make it a bad concert or DVD, just not their best live effort. On HTWWW, there's a Danish show, if I remember correctly, where you really hear Plant's voice in top form. Plant either couldn't or wouldn't hit the top notes live in concert by TSRTS.

They ever get a chance to play "Hot Dog" live?

If so, that one.

This one was also feature on their "Tour Over Europe" in 1980, before Bonzo bit it.

They played it in '79 and '80. It was great, but Page was a little sloppy on it.

Page was a little sloppy on almost everything from 1972 on. One of the things that makes him great, IMO.

Page was sloppy on everything outside of the studio.

This is why I feel MSG '71 was their best concert. I know the recording is rough, but Plant never sounded this good again (except the Manchester '71 show). His voice just booms into the stratosphere. This version of Rock and Roll was their final encore. The song wasn't even named properly that night, because Zep IV wasn't released until Nov.

I always felt this. Outside of a bit of live changes here and there I always felt he had the heroin shakes or some shit in concerts. As for that pic above Bonzo really did look like a drinking guy my age before he died compared to the others.
