Such a good album it deserves its own thread. "Walk of Life" always reminds me of The Heavy Fuel Crew. Money for Nothing reminds me of the pothead that used to bring his boombox on the high school bus. He'd play that song and Crazy Train over and over.

This CD got heavy listening when I was in college. So Far Away always reminds me of my now-wife who had to go back to California for the summers. the first time she left I cried in my dorm room and got a horrendous nose bleed.

The album will be 35 years old next year!

It really was a good album. It was one of the cassettes we passed around the barracks during down time in infantry training. So Far Away From Me was played a lot.

And I wouldn't really say Dire Straits is very strong on melody. "Money For Nothing" is known for a guitar lick, not a melody.

The lyrics of "Money for Nothing" seem like something some woke kid from Naperville would write. They had that Archie Bunker effect: People who connected with the lyrics were actually being criticized.

Those idiots missed the irony. What idiotic idiots. (I never did, of course. Nope.)

Great album. Their self-titled debut was also really good. I love Knopfler's guitar paying. The way he finger picks the electric really makes it sing. And yes, the "Money for Nothing" riff is a melody and probably the most recognizable melody out of the many that are in that song.

Okay, technically, yeah that lick is a melody. But I would argue that when people talk about melody in pop songs they generally mean a vocal melody.

Jonny Greenwood was a music student but the rest of Radiohead were not. John Mayer comes to mind. But usually it's art school dropouts who make the best rock bands, not classically trained music students. The problem is that being a music major pretty much saps your soul too much to make rock.

I have multiple points:

1) Making Movies is a better album than Brothers in Arms. The song Brothers in Arms is solid enough to be part of Making Movies album.
1a) I personally am glad that Hatchetman did not own Making Movies because he was not exposed to Romeo and Juliet...crying in his pillow at the dorm may have led to a negative final outcome for hatchetboy.
2) Money for Nothing was a great MTV song. That was about it. I want to punch puppies when I hear the first notes of Walk of Life (who hoo...)
3) The remainder of the Dire Straits catalog doesn't move bowels or anything else for that matter.
4) While I may be a double-bogey poster here at CFMB, I am going to step up my game and ask an 'on par' CFMB question. Who are these British Puss Rock Bands? Why have I never heard of this genre before?

Interesting. Dire Straits released British Puss Rock in the late 70's. Are they like the founding members or something? I get both Radiohead and ColdPlay fitting into this genre. I missed one hell of a longstanding musical phenomenon.

Radiohead and Dire Straits have nothing to do with each other. Radiohead was born of wanting to do American grunge songs but really being U2 at heart.

Dire Straits is more of the British equivalent to Los Lobos: I appreciate the musicianship and know I should like them, but I can't make the emotional connection.
