Yeah they're fantastic. Its like you said about music taking you back so the memories are good too. The cheese factor was pretty high but the hair metal bands were fun. Grunge was ok but it wasn't that fun.

Yep. In the moment I hated grunge. As I have gotten older I have grown to tolerate it a little more and admit there is some good stuff mixed in it. But it was never fun like the hair bands. I miss those days. But I guess it just means we are getting older

November Rain is an interesting one. Probably technically it would be a power ballad. But I don't know how many view it as such, and I think Axl Rose would be furious with the thought of it even being mentioned along side of "hair bands." He saw that trilogy of songs/videos in such a unique way almost like a docudrama. But a great song nonetheless.

It's interesting. That style/formula of song has been absorbed into Country Pop. It's very recognizable. But that vocal style, which was so prized in that era has all but disappeared, except in joke bands like Steel Panther.

Most of the "singers" from that era were terrible. Sebastian Bach and Geoff Tate excluded, given their classical training.
They all stole the Vince Neil (fake Robert Plant) style. Same thing happened with grunge and the Vedder clones.

Sadly, this was at it's peak during my Jr. and Sr years of high school. Fucking awful. My one friend put it best.....most bands had one for every album to drive sales. The line of integrity was they couldn't release it as the first single....that's just too easy. It had to wait until the 2nd or 3rd single / video from the album.

Pretty unfair to put Tesla in this category....they never had the glam image at all. Their music was and is still very credible.

Every Rose Has It's Thorn has to be the reigning champion. Funny I think REO Speedwagon's "Keep On Loving You" was the first one.

THANK God, this is over....complete garbage. I don't mind some of them, but by 1989 it was pretty fucking nauseating with every band putting one out.

It seems the term "power ballad" has changed over the years. In the 80's it was invented to describe the the songs the hair bands were cranking out but it seems to have been co-opted to describe any ballad. I googled some best "power ballad" lists and Phil Collins, Bonnie Tyler, and Bryan Adams made the lists.

Since you are one of my favorite posters and a member of Team Spaulding I am just going to pretend this post does not exist.

Good question. I didn't consider Guns 'n Roses a hair band. They didn't have fizzy guitars and were a lot darker. The song on the album was more of a rocker than the radio edit. It did serve the purpose of a power ballad though by giving them exposure on radio and MTV. The first single was Welcome to the Jungle which MTV only played on Headbanger's Ball. Appetite for Destruction didn't blow up until they started playing Sweet Child o' Mine in heavy rotation on MTV.

If I had to pick one from GNR I'm with Drebin on November Rain. They don't really come to the forefront though.

I always thought it was strange they almost glammed up GNR. Their first video had Axl with his hair all teased and hair sprayed in Welcome to the Jungle. Fortunately someone thought better.
