In the Chicago thread from the other day BigW72 said something about ballads. The last few days one of my playlists is monster ballads and my husband and I are having a discussion about good ones, bands, and who made the best ones. I say there is no question about band or song because the best 2 ballads are made by the same band. What say you? If RFDC is the only one to post I totally understand.

I do love me some Monster Ballads.

Man the best song and band? That is a tough one.

Trying to think of who would be the band with the 2 best in your mind.

What are perfect or near perfect examples? Does it have to be a hair band?

Don’t know if it’s a monster ballad per se but I’ll throw a vote for Silent Lucidity .

That and Home Sweet Home are definitely examples of them.

There is obviously a lot of subjectivity to it. I know some who consider Sweet Child O Mine to be a monster ballad. I wouldn't agree.

Right?

I googled rock ballads and stuff like Hey Jude popped up.

Hey Jude, not a ballad.

Does Freebird qualify?

I've always hated the misuse of the word "ballad" in this context. Ballads are narrative stories set to music. These are just schmaltzy moon/June love songs.

I think you nailed it with Warrant or Cinderella. Cinderella can jam. I could listen to them now and not think I am listening to cheesed out hair metal. Winger qualifies if you add Miles Away.

Like you weren't romancing some unsuspecting coed at Chicago St to the tunes of the Stylistics or Ray, Goodman and Brown.

Nope, my soundtrack was always House music. Or Anita Baker.

Long strokes my friend.

I think it is all one and the same. Monster Ballads. Power Ballads. Power Ballad is probably the more official name whereas Monster Ballad kind of took off as a name connected to more of the hair bands.

you can hate it all you want it's monster ballads there was a tv ad and everything. Might have even been in the cd club you could join and get them all for a penny.

My favorite 2 songs ballad wise are by Poison Something to Believe in and Every Rose has it's Thorn. My husband said no Every Rose has it's thorn is not one and it should be a song like Damn Yankees Can you take me higher because it was on a commercial. Home Sweet Home and Without You by Motley Crue are close seconds and Never Let You Go by Steeleheart is one of my all time favorites. Firehouse and Slaughter were also discussed.

Then we talked about how I should be watching Beavis and Butthead watching these videos.

Then he said you know what I could go for? I said a reach around? No. A blow job? No. A Mercedes Convertible? No. A new pair of brown boots? No. A new black purse? No. A good Margarita? No, are you almost done? Yes, What? Ice cream.

This category isn’t my strong suit and maybe these don’t fit but I always liked Beth by Kiss and Goodbye to Romance by Ozzy.

Every Rose Has its Thorn was my first guess for you, but I couldn't think of another one by them to go with it. So I went with Cinderella. I find it surprising that some list Fallen Angel by Poison as a Monster ballad too. Not sure I get that one. I think it is one of their more underrated songs, but I don't think I consider it a Monster ballad.

No way Fallen Angel is one and I love Poison. They were good at the time but they've had the most staying power for me now. We are on the same page in this thread.
