The Beatles produced 12 albums in 7 years, quit at 30, made a few really good solo albums and then that was it. No one makes great albums in their 40's and very few artists make good albums in their 30's. The answer is no one. The Beatles model is the way to go.

"blonde on blonde" begins with one of bob dylan's worst songs, and doesn't have a single song better than "tangled up in blue". music critics pick "blonde on blonde" as his best but i don't. i don't even think it's as good as "free wheelin'", "highway 61" or "john wesley harding".

I was looking up Gaucho-era Steely Dan records thinking those dudes were in their mid-forties by then, only to find out they both just turned 30.

I love all those albums. It’s hard to choose. Blonde on Blonde is a strong choice. I just haven’t put anything above Blood on the Tracks since I became a fan and can’t see myself ever doing so.

It’s been a bit since I’ve revisited Time out of Mind tho so may do that tonight after a few more drinks.

I don’t mean to diss Blonde on Blonde I just don’t have the reverence for it that a lot of fans do. It’s a great album but it’s a double album and those are always heavy handed.

George Carlin's best album definitely was after 40 -- take your pick from You Are All Diseased, Complaints and Grievances, Its Bad For Ya, or any of the 90s stuff.

I thought long and hard about this and its really hard to come up with anyone but I am going to go with George Strait. He was 40 or turning 40 when Pure Country came out so everything after that, which includes a ton of hits, was post 40 for him.

Eric Clapton - Unplugged

I know his solo stuff is not everybody's cup of tea, but that is likely his best work. He was 47 when it was recorded/released.

He took a tortured song of desperation about being hopelessly in love with his best friend's wife and sat strumming a bastardized version with his legs crossed while a bunch of rich yuppies sang along. And "Tears in Heaven"? Just dreadful stuff. I'd much rather listen to "Eric Clapton Pushed His Kid" by Severed Scrotum.

Like I said, I know his stuff isn't for everybody. But that album is one of the best selling live albums of all time (at one point, it was #1) and won six Grammys. You can't deny that with the crap throughout most of his solo career, its probably his best solo album.

Slowhand is a great record, but in terms of commercial success it really doesn't hold a candle to Unplugged.

Yield is a great PJ record- one of my favorite albums ever- but Ten and Vs have that lapped a few times in terms of sales.

EC Was Here is a FAR superior live album to Unplugged.

Clapton was in the midst of his deepest depths of drug addiction and internal struggles. The blues are real and thick... Unplugged is polished and neutered meh.

One of my college roommates played "Wonderful Tonight" upon returning from the library late at night. Probably 3-4 times a week. I was never the biggest Clapton fan before that, but I definitely developed a strong dislike. I never was all that much into Cream, other than "White Room" and his solo work reminds me of the Dave Matthews Band - stellar musicianship, but subpar songwriting. Layla unplugged is an abomination. Motherless Children is a cool tune, though.

I'm a Clapton fan, but I know there is enough shit through his solo career that it turns people off of him entirely. He's a great guitarist, especially in the Blues genre.

But the title of the thread is best album after age 40. In terms of commercial success, nearly 30 million copies sold and six Grammys for a record made after age 40 is going to be tough to beat.
