I thought it was just a series of novenas with certain meals afterward. I had never heard of it until my brother-in-law moved to this parish near Antioch. I was kind of surprised that there would be such a large Filipino congregation at his little church.

The Filipinos are a generous people.

Where I grew up for weddings, we had the dollar dance. People would stand in line and throw a dollar in a hat to dance with the bride or groom.

The Filipino side made origami out of 20s/50s/100s and pin them on the bride’s dress or my tux.

There is a certain monetary expectation in gifts/donations in my experience.

As a Believer, I love a lot of the classic Christmas hymns.
As a music critic, if I hear any more c-lister covers of Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" or Wham!'s "Last Christmas", I'm gonna set off an m-80 next to my ears to render me deaf.

in recent years a few new ones for me: "prepare him room" by sovereign grace, "snow" by loreena mckennitt, and i can't believe with my wife being such a big monkees fan it took this long to discover "riu chiu". their harmonizing was awesome. funny coincidence that the hymn is also referenced in the latest joe pera season.

george winston's "december" album is always a must spin during this season too.

I have two Bing Crosby box sets.

Interesting note (to me -the rest of you can F-off….Merry Christmas), Bing Crosby thought Fred Astaire was the best singer he ever heard. He noted the way he melodically would phrase the song was impeccable.

Im a Bing fan as far as Christmas songs go. Probably not parenting advice however.

in generally I think the First Noel and O Come, O Come Emmanuel hit me pretty good. A few others do too but I'm a general fan of the classics in moderation. The 5 hours of driving every Christmas seems like a good time to fill the consumption.

I like torturing my kids with Blue Christmas.
