Post subject:  Radiohead.. The Best Of

I apologize if this band or disc has been discussed previously. I just
picked this up two weekends ago as I have always been curious about
them and only knew their "popular" music that has hit the radio over
the years. This album came out last year and throws together 17 songs
from their current listing of albums. I will give you a run down of the songs
on the disc briefly so you know what it includes.

Just - Paranoid Android - Karma Police - Creep - No Surprises - High and Dry
My Iron Lung - There There - Lucky - Optimistic - Fake Plastic Trees - Idioteque
2+2=5 - The Bends - Pyramid Song - Street Spirit (Fade Out) - Everything In Its Right Place

For those of you who know the band, is this a good representation of some of their
best work? Are there any full albums out there that I should go ahead and consider
buying if I like 80% of what was on the disc I bought? I don't know how popular
these guys are anymore but I know the board has a pretty eclectic mix so thought
I would bring it here. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

that's a pretty good representation.

I would pick up o.k. computer, kid a, amnesiac, hail to the thief, and in rainbows....

or, i can burn you a mp3 data disc of all their albums.

Thanks Doug. No need to burn anything at this point. I am going to chew on
it for a while yet before I decide to dig deeper. Glad that this sums up a majority
of their better stuff. Just like any album, there are often songs you find that you
really dig that aren't considered main stream enough to make an album like this.
I really appreciate the offer though.

I agree with Doug. If I'm right, this "greatest hits" album was released against Radiohead's wishes by EMI, their old record label. In Rainbows, their last record, isn't represented. From that record, I'd select 15-Step, Bodysnatchers and Jigsaw Falling Into Place. And there's a 8-song disc of B-sides that goes with it, which I think you can download from the band's web site.

Other songs that just miss that cut (for me): The National Anthem, Let Down, Knives Out, and Go to Sleep.

Also, Radiohead has a ton of B-sides, many of which are as good as album tracks. I believe The Bends, a 12-song record from '95, has something like 20 non-album tracks.

On BitTorrent you can probably download the entire catalogue as one zip file (MP3 or FLAC), including deluxe editions of The Bends, OK Computer (maybe more).

Thanks for all the info J&M. You were right this was put out by EMI.
I believe Sony did something similar with Pearl Jam when they left by
putting out a 2 disc Best Of disc to capitalize as much as they could
on the band before they switched labels.

Funny how one of the best and most influential bands of the last 15 years first got popular with perhaps the lamest song in their entire catalog.

You can't go wrong with any of their studio albums, T-Bone.
Money well spent.
They are amazing live also. I've only seen them once, but the HTTT tour stop at Alpine is unforgettable.

If you are referring to Creep then I know what you mean. I have skipped it the last
few times going through the disc. An ok song but so much better stuff on there. It
was worth the purchase.

I give this band quite a bit of negative shit, but I did find The Bends to be pretty solid.

i've actually never thought of "creep" as that bad, it was actually one of the better "mtv buzz clips" of that time. it just got horribly over played. thom yorke is a pretentious ass, and would hate "kid a" if it got as much buzz as "creep" did.

that being said, i love radiohead and would never, ever, ever buy something that said "best of..." on it. corporate junk.

For someone that only knew Creep but had heard good reviews of the band the "Best Of" album
has been a blessing. I will likely go back and buy some of the select cds others have mentioned
here in the future.

i guess that's their purpose, too...i'm just saying me personally, i don't think of radiohead as that kinda band. their albums should be enjoyed on the whole...except "pablo honey" and "the bends" can be enjoyed as "singles" albums or whatnot. but "ok computer" and everything after, is an experience.
