Hey, it's you as Soda, Matches as Bald Bull, and me as King Hippo, so I think you got the best draw on that one.

It's odd how forgettable Roy Jones Jr. is to me. Great boxer/fighter, but he had the misfortune of fighting during a period where there was really only interest in the heavyweights.

He was tough as hell though as far as I recall.

Ali, Frazier & Foreman would have. Frazier would have killed him.

As for Lawrence Holmes, I can't see him in the top 10 of just heavyweights. But that may largely be because he fought in a remarkably dead period of heavyweight boxing. I'm having a hard time mustering respect for any of the guys he routinely clobbered.

Tex Cobb, Gerry Cooney? Heresy.

I think Ruddock was great at the time

He beat everyone put in front of him. Its not like he was ducking anybody

Sure, it's not his fault there weren't any great heavyweights, but it matters.

Hoping I remember about that.

I don't mind a boxing match not having any heat ... just give me a few rounds of passable boxing on easily-accessible television not named USA so I can pretend it's 1980 again.

I guess I can understand excluding Greb because of no video footage, but most people these days put him in the top 3 on these lists. Aside from him I'd say Ezzard Charles was the other glaring omission. Overall I think heavyweight is overrepresented and Johnson ahead of Langford is kind of silly.

It reminds me of Kellerman's spiel (although I'm sure it wasn't his originally) that if you go to a street and on one corner you see guys playing basketball, one corner is guys playing baseball, one corner guys playing football, and on the other is 2 guys fighting, most everyone would watch the guys fighting. Boxing should be an easy sell.

At the risk of driving everyone else out of the thread with our geekdom, I have to ask why Barrera over the other Mexicans in his generation?

Well, heavyweight is the glamor division. All things being equal, I think most people would take the heavy over the lighter guy.

Langford is the guy Johnson refused to fight, right? I suppose by that reasoning, putting him ahead is silly, but I do think most experts would consider Johnson greater.

Mostly because Vasquez and Raffy Marquez, while total warriors, mostly made their names just fighting each other. They ended each others' careers with all that punishment absorbed from those wars.

Barrerra took a lot of different guys to war, ended Prince Naseem Hamed's Career (I would put Prince on list right above Michael Spinks, and Kevin Kelly right below him), and he basically put Pacman on the map when he lost to him the first time.

Glaring omission by me was Erik Morales. I'd put him right above Trinidad.

I also would put Gatti right above Zab Judah.

Yeah I was mostly asking about Morales and Marquez. I'm a huge Morales stan, thought the second fight Barrera where he got screwed was the clearest of their 3 fights, and generally prefer his resume. I also think the third and fourth Pacquiao fights are sufficient justification to have Marquez ahead of both.

Judah over Tszyu is an interesting choice too. I feel like Zab could have been on the list but never really demonstrated it in the ring.

You're right about the division but it's also been historically one of the weakest IMO. Also the logic of putting Langford ahead of Johnson isn't simply because Johnson refused to fight him but also because Langford's resume is better I think, in spite of how much of an icon Johnson was.

Strangely enough when boxing wen with all the lighter weight Mexican fighters I seemed to lose interest. I liked that there was more action but they didn't seem big time. Also, boxing in general went away from my tv and I was not doing a PPV per month.
