Meeting between Raiders ownership and Sheldon A. happening in Vegas.

Proposal for a 1.3 Bill dollar facility.

I don't doubt the Raiders want to move and I dont doubt Vegas wants them, Adelson wants them, they can easily get the money.

Now you need to sell Roger & Co. , which to date is the reason they arent there.

Cant even bribe the other owners, because they make so much money to start, so kicking them each back another $50 mill, just doesnt matter.

Although it should happen and would be an ideal scenario, dont see it.

The Las Vega$ Raider$ . The name works.

If Vegas gets a team, Vegas gets a Super Bowl. That would be a fun week in Vegas.

Bad idea. Professional sports wont work in Vegas.

Post subject:  Re: Vegas Raiders

To me, only two problems with a Vegas team.

1) People are nervous about the gambling -- so they ban gambling on the Vegas Raiders games in Vegas, but still you can gamble wherever in the world. I don't see this as being a serious concern because if I were to persuade someone to throw a game, it is just as easy to do it in Kansas City as Vegas, but I'm sure there is still some nervousness around it.

2) You can really never have home field advantage. The fact that 95% of games happen on a weekend, in the fall/winter, makes Vegas an ideal place to go for the weekend when your team is in town. If the Bears play in Vegas on November 10th, I'm sure I could easily sell 60k tickets to Chicago fans looking for a road trip.... it is such an easy sell. But if you lose home field advantage, do you lose players wanting to come play for your team in free agency? How do you deal with the LV fanbase that wants you to put in some sort of zip code based restriction on sales when you know LV homers can't sell it out on their own?

A MLB team could never work there because you couldn't handle 81 games, but they could certainly handle 8 games a year.

It would for the NFL for sure. Cuz all opposing teams fans would plan their trips to Vegas when their team is there. So they'd sell out. Wouldn't be much of a home field advantage for Vegas Raiders, but they'd always have sell outs.

Yeah they would. There would be enough of a fan base by the Vegas locals. And the tourists would fill the rest of the stadium. Be better than Jacksonville. Plus the Oakland people would still love their Raiders and make the trip to Vegas.

It would work.

Rather be in the Bay Area than Las Vegas, even if the stadium is situated in Oakland. The California and Texas teams will be all about a Vegas team because it keeps the Raiders out of the Bay, L.A., and San Antonio, but I could see the NFL old-money families reasserting their power after the Rams move and putting their foot down against Vegas.

Post subject:  Re: Vegas Raiders

They wold still be in the AFC west if they were in Vegas. You telling me the Chiefs, Broncos and Chargers fans wouldn't plan trips to Vegas for that week? That's 3 games. Then when the Bears, Giants, Cowboys, Packers, Steelers, Patriots and other big fan bases play there, they absolutely would plan trips and buy tickets. It would work.

People aren't as squeamish about gambling as they used to be. Gambling is legal in London. NFL has also embraced Draft Kings, et al.

There are a number of teams that would jump at the chance to move to Vegas, in every league, including the white sox, yet the league's themselves have always been the issue.

Vegas government and private equity are more than ready to take any team.

Post subject:  Re: Vegas Raiders

Like I said, it absolutely would work for all leagues. But especially football. Only 8 games. It's in the fall and winter. That's when people plan Vegas trips more so than the Summer and Spring. You absolutely would have 20 or 30 thousand Bears fans when they play there. Same with a lot of other visiting teams.

Cool thing is they can have windows for betting at the stadium. Maybe the stadium could partner up with another casino on the strip so you don't have to cash it at the stadium after the game. Cuz the lines would be a bitch. You could just cash it at the partner casino on the strip. But the NFL wouldn't allow this.

I follow some "business of sports" sites. None of the posters can claim to know the "inside track" on any of this, but some would suggest that the Kroeneke LA sports stadium/NFL temple/multi zillion dollar thing he's building won him fans among other owners, enough so that there are those who feel Kroeneke deserves LA on his own, at least for now.

Meanwhile, political leaders in Oakland are not sounding enthusiastic about doing the financial back flips that the Twin Cities did to keep the Vikings, so I think the Raiders will go somewhere. Levi's Stadium is not going well for the 49'ers, and Davis apparently doesn't want to go there anyway.

San Diego has made some headway recently about the convention center/stadium project they've talked about before, and the Charger/city talks are at least not as acrimonious as they were several months ago. Plus, the league likes having San Diego in play for hosting Super Bowls, so that may work out.

With Vegas, there may be people in the league who at least are grateful that this Davis isn't acting like his dad, and that he could be rewarded for not bitching and threatening court actions, etc. So if he wants Vegas, there might be more important people than in the past who are willing to think they owe him one.

Vegas has enough arenas, but I've read there has been some interest in a larger facility of some kind for major sports and bigger concert draws; the stadium currently being used by UNLV is arguably close in quality to Huskie Stadium in DeKalb, which does not make it really workable for other uses as is.

Vegas has private money, and Vegas taxpayers haven't really been hit yet with paying for many other large projects like this one would be. Davis has about $200-300 million to work with, and it's been suggested that Vegas could pay for all or most of it through tourist taxes (rental cars, hotel rooms, etc.) Plus you have Vegas billionaire Sheldon Adelson expressing clear interest:

I think Vegas is a real possibility.

There are still a lot of Raider fans in LA, and both LA and Oakland are easy enough trips to Vegas that the crowd would be at least 30% Raider fans. But put the Bears or the Giants or the JETS or the Patriots out there, and it'll be like a Blackhawks game in Nashville.

Hell, even I would go to a football game in Vegas, and I have never been to a Bears game in my life, not even a preseason one where people are giving their tickets away.

I don't see this happening, though their NHL expansion team is a formality at this point. Sounds like they'll go to 31 teams and just not give Quebec the franchise they applied for with Vegas.

It wasn't "thought about," an AFL franchise was awarded to the Twin Cities before the NFL offered one instead and ownership took the better offer. (I think the NFL did the same thing with Atlanta and/or New Orleans.) Oakland was sort of thrown together at the last minute, and their ownership structure has been convoluted and jury-rigged ever since.

So in order to award a franchise,it had to be thought about first.

WISDOM!

There is value to other owners when you dont bitch and scream about stuff like this. The Baseball group that wanted Vegas, you barely heard a peep from as they knew, Washington was ahead of them in the pecking order, unless they couldnt pull together a stadium deal.

Davis has taken upon this venture in a businesslike mode, not something his Dad would have done.

There is no doubt, huge concerns from the league on the Vegas gambling angle of things, but it just shouldnt be an issue anymore. The players on ANY team can get into more trouble in vegas on the off week or the offseason, when many of them head to Vegas anyways. I just dont think the team and players living in the town will be an issue, its a different world these days and making a bet isnt the taboo thing it once was and only limited to Nevada.

I think it has legs, but needs a big push from Kraft, Jones, Mara, Rooney type to get going.

Yeah, I'm with you and not the Vegas boosters (surprise!) on this. I don't think Nevada has the public money to build this or the will to do it for the Raiders. Plus, I wouldn't count out non-Adelson ventures like MGM saying they don't want money going to this stadium, not after they shelled out big for the new T-Mobile Arena (think Reinsdorf blocking the Amazing Dome). The Raiders get $300MM from the NFL to build in the East Bay; I'm pretty sure they forfeit that by walking out on their home.

Vegas has enough going for it without the NFL. The league is better off super-serving the Bay Area (now more than ever with the Niners all the way down in Santa Clara) than trying to separate more money from a place that exists only to separate money from people.

I'll never visit Oakland to see a Raiders game so Vegas is much better.
