I'll never visit Oakland to see a Raiders game so Vegas is much better.

it wouldn't, because you're talking about an event that happens once a year, not 8 times a year. the novelty would wear off after a season or two, especially if the raiders couldn't make the playoffs consistently.

i think the same will happen with the LA rams actually. sure it's fun to see the team there again, but if they don't keep up with their division, they'll just be another shitty team in california that no one cares about--just like they were 20 years ago.

The road to hell is paved with "with a location like this, this sports team can make it on visiting fans alone!" Hi NHL!

I don't care if Vegas gets a team, but I think the transient factor combined with the bad economy make it a bad idea.
Keep the Chargers in San Diego and put the Rams / raiders in LA and close it down.

No they wont. Professional sports in Vegas, especially hockey, has failure written all over it.

Why? If you're a fan, it's more interesting to watch a game at the home rink. If you're above the age of 27-28, or married, or have kids & less free time, why waste Vegas time/opportunity on something you can do in 30 other cities.

And Las Vegas "residents" such as they are will have little lasting interest in following a middling team like even the Raiders, unless they turn back into the 70-80's version. Ask Atlanta/Phoenix/San Diego/Tampa "fans".

Raider Nation plus dudebros on VEGAS BABY trips would be the worst hooliganism in American sports. Another team could build a new stadium out of all the bricks the NFL would shit.

Tampa Bay: 94% full

I'm not sure about an NHL team in a desert but the NFL would do just fine in Vegas just like they do just fine in those other places.

There are at least 150,000 hotel rooms in Vegas...conventions all the time...the season ticket holder base will get snatched up in a heartbeat for NHL...by fans and by casinos. Opponent's fans will make a pilgrimage once or twice a season to catch their favorite team in Vegas. The NHL would do just fine.

The NFL would kill there...just like everyplace else.

NFL would thrive in Vegas. NFL revenues are TV driven and there are only 8 regular season dates plus any post season dates anyways.

Vegas' transplant population and indifferent nature wouldn't be a detriment to football. There is no need to be invested in 82 or 162 games.

NHL, NBA or MLB would likely fail. The nature of NFL means moving the Raiders would be a resounding success.

There simply arent enough hockey fans who will take a trip to vegas to see a hockey game. Hockey is barely a major sport with a fairly small fan base. Hockey in the desert has always been a bad idea and always will be a bad idea.

Atlanta: 96% full. Falcon corporate partners routinely go buy seats to allow the local broadcast to be shown. It's more telling that now they're giving pop, pizza and snacks away at 1990 prices.
Phoenix: 97% full They actually had a good team for the 3rd-4th time in AZ history & the snowbirds do help
San Diego: 95% full(even as the owner alienated all the fans) Maybe the Chargers don't merit inclusion, I'll give you that one. But, no other SD team owner has ever actually been comfortable there.
Tampa Bay: 94% full It's the first year in SIX that the attendance has even been above 60K a game. It's still 3K below levels of 2008 (64.5K)

I'm not sure about an NHL team in a desert but the NFL would do just fine in Vegas just like they do just fine in those other places.

I don't doubt that any average NFL team would do well for the first 5-6 years. Fine even.

Without a winner on the field, "fine" and "well" wouldn't be appropriate descriptors for an NFL owner's bottom line after that though. My guess is "underperforming" and "lethargic" results would be fitting.

How's UNLV basketball done in the last 20?

I can easily see doing an annual Vegas trip some weeknights when the Hawks are there. Go out for 3 days and 2 nights, see the Hawks the second night. You still get a nice dinner or a show if you're into that.

I did watch the Vegas ECHL team one Saturday night because i am not a go to clubs person. It was amusing, they use(d) the Orleans' arena so you could valet there and walk through the casino and into the arena. Then gamble a little bit after the game.

The thing about the NHL in Vegas is that there are huge intermissions. If the NHL allows slot machines to operate in the arena during the intermissions, that'll be interesting.

That also sounds like a reason why Vegas would be just as good as other teams though and clearly it would be a lot more fun to visit than Oakland.

I assume bad. However, DePaul doesn't do well in Chicago and the NFL works here.

Sure there are. The arena could be smallish, 15-16k seats or so...3-5k seats available to each game on top of the season ticket base. It'd do fine.

The Raiders weren't enough of a success for Al Davis in Oakland twice and once in Los Angeles. Hell, the Raiders (& bad stadium choices) even ruined LA for the Rams once. These premier $1-2 Billion stadiums make little fiscal sense and people are starting to wake up. I just believe that the NFL is close to maxing out, and that its poor leadership will leave them (at least the family owned and large debt saddled teams) in a Daley sized hole soon. People are starting to realize that the game day "stadium experience" isn't worth the increasing cost and time consuming efforts. Unless you're in a skybox...or Green Bay, where you have nothing else.

I also firmly believe that 5-6 years out & without a winner, Vegas residents aren't going to want to foot the bill for the Raiders profits when simple water will be a dangerous issue they will finally have to address.

DePaul would do better if they had an actual AD, a commitment to men's basketball and a dose of NCAA D-1 reality.

If the Raiders move to Vegas, I would schedule a trip with going to a game in mind.

Did something similar when we went to Miami in 2013. Saw Rams-Phins game, on the 20 yard line, 28th row lower bowl, for like $62 a ticket.

Agree with everything you said. But that's why Raiders won't stay in Oakland. Vegas and San Antonio political leadres appear to still be thuggish enough to screw their constituents.

Yeah, no kids, solid job, one trip in 3+ years. I would posit that your interest would be close to what the overwhelming majority would do. It seems foolhardy to spend up to $2B for a stadium when you represent the typical "good" NFL fan. Especially when the casinos may already have guys like you coming in now every so often (I assume) anyway.

San Antonio still can't put together enough to pull the Saints out of New Orleans. They couldn't do it when gas was $5 a gallon, and the economies down there are taking hit after hit now. And believe me, Benson's been dying to get the hell out. I don't think San Antonio is even as strong as Tampa (& pro sports folks seem to know it, but continue to string them along as a useful "option").

Vegas just makes no fiscal sense for 12 NFL dates, a possible yearly slot in the NCAA tourney and a Super Bowl every 6-8 years. But if Adelson will front most of the money, the local govt there is just ballsy enough to screw their people for the rest of it, agreed.

40 million tourists a year and it's the NFL...I think Vegas makes more sense than just about any City without an NFL team.

btw: Sun Life was half to 3/4 full that day...with the Dolphins honoring Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor.

And it's worth it to the NFL, Vegas & their residents to spend $2B for one team's relatively modest increase in stadium revenue when all the Florida teams lead the way and haven't been able to max out for years? Especially when the LA market makes so much more sense?

At the end of the day, I've just joined the "building an NFL stadium is a foolish idea" club. Trying to operate an NFL team in Vegas seems just as foolhardy in the social media age. Especially the Raiders.
