Yes. I hated it because most people suck.

Yes.

But football is FAR superior on TV.

To me, only hockey and maybe basketball are the better sports in person.

Been to just two regular season NFL games in my life, one was for business. I have never been to a college football game. Been to hundreds of baseball games. No reason to see football in person. Much better at home.

I see where you're going, but a better analogy would be to say, "I'm a huge Beatles fan. I don't own any of their recordings, but I just love them!" Anyone can claim to be a fan of anything. It's really easy to do.

That's an awful analogy.

For your analogy to work, someone would have to claim to love the NFL but also not own any NFL related stuff and not watch any NFL games on TV.

Fan is short for fanatic. It doesn't take much commitment or fanaticism to put on the jersey grandma gave you for your birthday and turn on the television.

Right, but words and their definitions evolve. Don't pretend like you don't know that. A fan in modern day lexicon is clearly someone who enjoys something. It doesn't have a more significant meaning attached to it in our society. If you want to have your own little personal definition of the word that nobody else in society shares, then feel free to, but I would even question your White Sox fandom if that's the definition of the word. Why weren't you at last night's game?

I don't think there's a litmus test for fans. Be whatever kind of fan you want to be. You like something, you like it. But to base the "popularity" of something on a vast amount of people who have merely a passing interest is kind of silly. As for my White Sox fandom, there's a guy named James Duda who runs a Facebook group who went to like 88 Sox games last year. I certainly wouldn't claim to be the fan he is.

The hardest part about going to a game is the investment and opportunity cost.

Getting to the stadium to tailgate at 7-8am, game from 12 - 3:30 and then head home. It's a long ass day.

Plus you miss all the other glorious football games.

Watching football in person is great. You can see the development in the grand scheme. But without replay you miss subtle things that are quickly pointed out on TV. It's a trade off.

But mostly it's the opportunity cost of not being able to see other football games.

The thing about baseball versus football/hockey/basketball is with the last three you go because you want to see the game. With baseball it's like 95% enjoy the nice weather and 5% watch the game.

Well, OK. I guess you can go ahead and prune this thread, and I'll expect not to hear this line of reasoning in future sports popularity debates.

Also, the weather pretty much blows for football. It's better in college because it is done by Thanksgiving and then you can go to warm weather destinations for bowls like Florida, Texas, and Detroit.

To use a JORRism, if baseball games were being played outdoors in December no one would be there. Many stadiums are empty in April and Wrigley is almost always empty in October.

Way the hell back when, when the KC Cougars first opened up shop, I simply adored going to those games precisely because nobody was there (maybe a few hundred scattered all over the place) and for $6 it was front row wherever I felt like ... I could just sit there and watch baseball without having snot-nosed kids and soccer moms and drunken idiots bothering me with their ... well, breathing for one thing. I could sit there unmolested by the great unwashed, have a few beers, have a few smokes, yell a few off-color words, all without anything other than the game set before me. Of course, that's a rather narrowly specific set of circumstances set forth by a complete loon, so ... yeah. Still, I think baseball in person is better in certain ways, but I'm a sicko that wants to actually watch the game and all its minutiae, or at least as much as I am aware of.

My little sidebar...I have been to many games. One of them was Super Bowl XXXVIII (38?) :)....That is Janet Jackson Nipple Gate...However being there at the game, and I had great seats....I didn't see the "breast" part of her show. I didn't even know it happened. That is also the game where a fake ref came out at halftime....and proceeded to go streaking across the field. I saw that "boob"....and saw him get tackled hard by one of the Patriots. So being at the game..or watching on TV resulted in me seeing a boob in one form or another. A friend called me while at the game saying "did you see it?".....and I said "yes", not knowing the Janet Jackson nipple gate had even happened. So had a weird conversation as I talked about the streaker and he talked about JJ.

Here is a clip on youtube...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47Ccqhb2-wU

PS - One of the better SB's ever...with Patriots winning on last second field goal. Weird dynamic was Steven Tyler, Snoop Dog, and others were in a luxury box behind our section and were totally "acting the fool" while this dramatic ending was happening...much of the sections in that area were torn between the action on the field what looked like a rock star - strip club behind them / us.

College football is often better in person.

Yes, dozens. My interest in the NFL has waned lately, but it is the most popular sport.

Never been to an NFL game, and if someone invited me to a Bears game, I'd decline.

yes, at least one time per year

people who think it is better on TV are clueless.

Great time, even in the cold

Yes. All but maybe one or two seasons, I've gone to at least one Redskins game for the last 15 years.

It's cool to see other cities/stadiums, plus my dad and I have gone together for the last five years. No ragrets. Father-son time, yo.

I have been to six, and they were all Lions at Bears. Five at Soldier Field, and one in Champaign, where Marty Mornhinweg chose to kickoff in overtime (under the old rules).

Yes, I have been to many a game as a child and as an adult. One time a FG went over the net, I jumped to catch it and the next thing you know, I'm on Letterman.
