History is filled with stories of criminals or wanna-be criminals who aren’t that bright. And we have a couple more to add to that list.

According to the New Orleans Advocate, last year, then-New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was apparently the target of a robbery plan but a voicemail left for the wrong person thwarted it.

According to court documents obtained by the Advocate, on Aug. 30, 2015, a New Orleans-based employee of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management received 11 phone calls from the same local number. The woman was new to the city, so it was odd that she got so many calls from a number she didn’t recognize.

After one of the calls, the person left her a voicemail that went on for over two minutes.

“He ain’t got no security,” a garbled voice said, according to the court document. “He’s just a regular football coach … He ain’t … big … like [rapper] Lil Wayne or nobody … that got bodyguards everywhere.”

It continued.

“He ain’t like Lil Wayne,” the voice said. “He just a … football coach … Defensive coordinator of the Saints. He don’t have no bodyguards … in front his house.”

The federal worker turned the voicemail over to local authorities. Believing there was enough there to worry for Ryan’s safety, the New Orleans Police Department contacted the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Department, which patrols near the Saints’ facility in Metairie. The agencies agreed to alert Ryan of the threat.

New Orleans police were temporarily stationed outside Ryan’s home in the city’s Uptown district.

Targeting Ryan, who now works with his brother, Rex, with the Buffalo Bills, was allegedly part of a broader conspiracy concocted by eight young men to stage a number of robberies at Uptown bars and restaurants last year.
