http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... -starting/

Quote:
Eric Rowe didn’t know he was starting ahead of time. He didn’t know he would play almost every snap. He didn’t know Malcolm Butler wouldn’t play on defense.

“No, that wasn’t the plan,” Rowe said, via postgame quotes distributed by the league.

While Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia insisted that Butler was benched strictly for football reasons, something smells fishy.

Rowe played in only eight games this season and started only three. Butler started 15 of 16 regular-season games. He played every snap of the first two playoff games, while Rowe played 98 of the 141 snaps.

Once the game started and Butler stood on the sideline with his helmet on the entire game, it became clear why Butler wept during the national anthem.

“It wasn’t official until kickoff,” Rowe said when asked when he found out he would start. “. . . I feel for [Butler].”

Rowe did not play well Sunday night. He made four tackles and defensed two passes and repeatedly was beaten as the Eagles rolled to 538 yards, including 374 passing yards.

“Very frustrating,” Rowe said. “Obviously on the biggest stage. It is not like a regular-season game where you are like, ‘OK, we will bounce back.’ This was it.”

He is a free agent.

I would not be surprised if he ended up a Bear next year.

Belichick may have cost them a SB.

The SB would be a game to make an exception for whatever rule he broke.

Between this and deciding not to put Gilmore on Alshon from the get go...bad day for Belichick and Patricia. I also don't get how you blow the coverage so badly on that Foles TD catch. You ran the same damn play earlier in the game.

Yeah Patricia looked awful all game. If they get 1 stop the Patriots win. Brady will probably never have another game like that.

Boston sports radio is epic today. People are melting down about the Butler benching. Love it.

  I'm not saying that I saw it coming. I'm just a stupid fan on the couch. Considering NE ran a very similar play earlier in the same game....I just would expect a well coached team to be able to sniff that out.

He comes from a team other teams want to be like so he should be good right?

I would consider pulling the offer. One game is ok, but they did not look good throughout the postseason.

Who knows. Lovie was trash at the end with the Rams and he built a great defense overnight with the Bears. Maybe it'll work.

I just don't know how anyone can say with a straight face that Matt Patricia is a better choice for the Lions than Jim Caldwell.

I think people think, they will be getting some type of the NE model. No one has been able to replicate having the best QB in league history yet.

Because Caldwell is terrible.

No idea if Patricia will be better or not, but it is not a high bar to clear.

Caldwell was 36-28 in four seasons in Detroit with a playoff appearance. I'm not sure if you can define that as terrible, especially for the Lions franchise.

The new trend is young OCers. You see from the SB, defense doesn't matter.

Also the main problem on offense for the Lions is they just don't seem to give a shit about running the football, and that puts Stafford and the oline behind the 8 ball. So I don't understand the point of hiring Patricia and keeping Cooter, who as an OC, really doesn't seem to give a shit about the running game either. They have solved nothing.

A great example of why overall record is not an end all for how good or bad a coach is.

I did not say it was not part of the evaluation. But it is not all there is in it.

Caldwell has been a terrible game coach. His teams are not prepared. He makes terrible decisions in games and especially with clock management.

Since when is "defensed" an acceptable verb?

There's got to be a inneresting story on this Butler thing ... at least, there better be.
