His Ali G show ran on, iirc, HBO and maybe I saw it on BBC America before 2003-2004. Trailer Park Boys were also on BBC America in 2002 but with the gunplay and cursing and drugs edited out, so the BBC America TPB episodes were like 12 minutes and not very funny. Wasn't til the film came out around 2006 and was available on the torrent sites that I saw the full Trailer Park Boys experience and it made sense.

I think Borat dude put more effort into his Ali G character in the UK but then for whatever reason decided to use Borat as the character for wider exposure in the USA. Probably the language barrier thing made the interviews and interactions with Borat more believable than the too obvious faked idiocy of Ali G.

The outtakes or pre-movie film clips of Borat tend to be more enjoyable than the film, especially after the film exhausts the sanitized Borat bits and gloms on the Baywatch chick plotline:




Cohen denies being influenced by the internet "I Kiss You" guy in developing Borat but he's pretty much a 1 to 1 rip of the I Kiss You dude, including playing table tennis, wearing a too revealing speedo, being a sex-crazed journalist from the old soviet bloc etc etc:



sacha baron cohen claims to have had Borat in development prior to I Kiss You dude landing on the internet in 1999--but he's never shared any content featuring Borat prior to I Kiss You dude becoming internet famous so that's probably a litigation position.

I’m not sure the Ali G character would be treated with a whole lot of nuance in the US.
