I don't know about other mediocre white men, but when a large black man has that look on his face, I get scared.

That was the look Tomlin gave McDaniel when McDaniel tried beatboxing and rapping on the NFL black head coaches zoom call.

Tomlin isn't a big dude. He was even smaller when he played WR.

He’s got those crazy eyes and is a big time incomprehensible quote guy.

The standard is the standard. You have to understand coach speak.

Anybody who stares you down and says something along the lines of “We like to believe that we are the common denominator in all stories involving us” is a person you’re better off avoiding.

What’s more interesting is what’s left unsaid. I’d love to know what Tomlin thinks other people believe to be the common denominator in his or her life story.

Try again junior. I ran a 4.5 forty at 18. And unofficially faster later.

And a 47.1 quarter mile after years of running distance. And giving up a pint of blood in 96° heat. But a sideline guy warming a bench wouldn't know anything about that. Stick to cheerleading sweetheart.

Damn, a 47-second 440 is really fast. Who was chasing you, Reader?

I really want this Lions team to suck. Campbell annoys the shit out of me for some reason.

Yeah, he's quickly making the transition from lovable oaf to insufferably cocky cretin.

Incidentally, some guy named Ben Johnson is the Lions OC. Has he appeared on Hard Knocks yet? The producers make it appear as though Staley is the OC.

Funny you say that. I was wondering last night while watching why Duce was getting so much run and where the real OC was?

He has the personality of a Cubs fan that attends a game in the bleachers just to start a fight

I think it's mostly coach speak/motivational tactics. I don't think it's something he's going to do forever.

Idk. I liked him when I thought his bit was partly tongue-in-cheek but after three episodes I don’t think there’s a lot going on upstairs. Also, he punctuates every sentence with the word “man,” which irritates me to no end.

He seems like a guy who should either be a strength coach or some non-skill position coach. Or like a mob enforcer if something in that industry opens up.

The use of “man” in his vernacular is annoying just like people who end every statement with “you know”. But he seems like the type of coach that would be fun to play for. If you do well, he is going to be your biggest cheerleader.

He's a garden variety meathead who I don't mind because he seems earnest. D. Staley is the guy I can't stand. It seems like he's over the top when he sees the cameras rolling.

Yeah Staley is riding the backs too hard. When he lost his voice, I laughed.

Agree that Campbell seems genuine. And he is a real meathead.

The NFL season has emotional peaks and valleys, but he approaches his job like it's all peaks. Eventually, many of his players will tune him out while the true believers will be so amped that they're probably more likely to exhibit sociopathic behavior off the field and have run-ins with the law.

It will tune him out if they start losing. If the behavior works and motivates guys, they will play along. But yes, like Scott Skiles, that style grates on players over time.

Still most of my football coaches had some form of that style.

Maybe it's just the way the show is produced, but Campbell and his staff seem to spend more time yelling, pleading and screaming than they do teaching. The overwhelming focus is on going hard without emphasizing technique. It's an interesting contrast to Eberflus' "H.I.T.S Principle," which is trying to achieve the same objective but does so by managing even the most minute of player movements through a kind of "Scientific Management" (yes, I am referencing Frederick Winslow Taylor) approach to football.

Maybe it's just having come of age when you had quieter, more cerebral coaches like Tom Landry, Joe Gibbs, Bill Walsh among others who won more than once, screamers always seem to become caricatures of themselves and lose their effectiveness by year 3(or 4 if they're lucky).

Unless they get a much better roster, he'll be gone by January of 2023.
