Fast forward a bit to his last year, Bartowski - then with the Rams - led the team to Philly where he was bested in the Battle of the Poles by the Polish Prince himself, Ronald Jaworski

Jaworski > Bartowski

Jaws continued as the best player in the history of football until October 15, 1989, when he took his Kansas City Chiefs into the Coliseum to be outclassed by Jay Shroeder’s LA Raiders. Jaws fell to injury that day but the torch was passed:

Schroeder > Jaworski

Schroeder - a Milwaukee native and adopted son of LA - had a joyful, albeit brief reign as the GOAT. In November 1994 he was on the losing end of an all-timer to Steve Walsh’s Bears.

Walsh > Schroeder

Walsh & Dave Wannstedt would go on to fuel a return to glory for the NFL’s founding franchise. WWW as they were called by locals - in a nod to an emerging technology called the internet - racked up wins at an alarming rate. Unfortunately for the Bears’ faithful, their star burned too bright and ultimately collapsed on itself while Walsh headed for the moister climes of St. Louis. It was there where Walsh was surpassed by a young upstart named Gus Frerotte, leading a commanding football team performance at the helm of the Redskins.

Frerotte > Walsh

Frerotte had a turbulent time as the GOAT, bouncing around between 6 franchises, though never relinquishing the crown. Never - that is - until 2005, when Pro Bowl Gus (as he’s know in league circles) welcomed a nondescript California kid named Tom Brady and the New England Patriots into Dolphins Stadium. Brady’s Pats were surgical that day, taking apart the Dolphins 23-16. The king was dead, long love the king.

Brady > Frerotte

Brady’s tenure was short lived however, as just two weeks later the Patriots saw true greatness in the form of Kansas City quarterback Trent Green. Green’s Chiefs thumped the Patriots, resigning both them and their young QB to dustbin of history.

Green > Brady

Green was an old GOAT, and sure enough, a few short years later he met his end at the hands of Trent Edwards and the Buffalo Bills. What can you say about Edwards that hasn’t already been said?

Edwards > Green

Edwards was destined for greatness. But like so many men, that greatness was to be found elsewhere. In his case elsewhere meant northern Florida. Edwards took the helm in Jacksonville and promptly turned the franchise into the envy of the NFL. Until 2011 that is, when UVA legend Matt Schaub climbed to the top of the mountain after his Texans crushed Edwards’ Jags.

Schaub > Edwards

Schaub would go on to usher in the era of the Matts. Leinart, Stafford, LeFluer…often imitated, but never duplicated, Schaub would remain GOAT until vacating the title in a 2016 win against to Tampa Bay’s new QB1 Jameis Winston. Schaub didn’t start that day, but he rode off into the sunset knowing the league was in good, albeit slightly small, hands.

Winston > Schaub

The Crab Leg King was a formidable GOAT, but injuries took their toll and he eventually succumbed in a 2018 trip to the Windy City. There he met his match in another young upstart, Mitchell David (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky. Mr. Biscuit tossed for 6 TDs and more than 350 yards that day, seizing the mantle of all time great that he’s yet to relinquish.

(Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky > Winston
