In that situation, Bradberry had 2 choices if he got beat. He could commit a penalty that gives the Chiefs a first down or essentially let his man score.

I think Mahomes misses JuJu if he doesn't commit the penalty. We're probably talking about an Eagles win and a bone headed decision to throw the ball.

He had one choice, and that was to make a stop. In his effort to make a stop, he committed a penalty. There was no (nor would anyone have) a contingency to let the other team score on 3rd and 8.

His #1 task was to NOT commit a penalty which would 100% end the game.

I completely agree with that. The penalty 100% ended their hopes.

It's also another example of why defensive holding should not be an automatic first down. Only personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct should carry that weight.

I am surprised this hasn’t received more national airplay. At least once a game some offense has a 3rd and 18 and they get an auto first down because some DB held a WR on a four yard slant.

Five yards and replay the down for holding within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. 10 yards and replay down for holding beyond 10 yards.

I agree with this, and I also dont like the spot foul for defensive pass interference.

This is one of the places I agree with college. If they are going to call so much PI then just make it the 15 yard and automatic first down.

If you want the defense to hold on every pass play then take the automatic first down away.

Why? So anytime you're beat downfield for more than 15 yards it is best to just yank down a receiver?

Does that happen a lot in college? I am not sure. It just seems to me over the last decade or more there is too much PI. Maybe call holding of WRs better and save PI for egregious interference?

DPI is way to much of a bailout in the NFL. Assuming every ball is going to be caught is way to stiff of a penalty. 15 yards and a first down.

It's rare for that to happen. Most of the time if you are beat downfield you aren't close enough to grab the receiver.

Also, it actually helps the offense because a lot of PI isn't called because the refs don't want to do a 55 yard penalty.

So you think a viable defensive strategy is to commit a five yard penalty on every play?

In certain situations, yes.

The Patriots have won Super Bowls applying such a strategy on pass plays.

I'd like you to recommit to the exercise of reading.

Does not seem like the original genius idea is strategic.

Ha, in high school it is not even an automatic first down. In fact defensive holding is the same as offensive (ten yards) and the only auto first downs are on roughing the kicker, snapper, holder, QB.

You should think through these things instead of leaning on something ridiculous like "every play" to help your flawed argument.

Here is a really good replay that does show the clear hold, but also shows Orlando Brown Jr with a clear hands to the face on Sweat. Should have been offsetting penalties. Or they could have put their whistles aside and just let the two teams fucking play.... Has officiating ever been worse?

Can't agree more. 30 cameras now catch everything & there's really a penalty on every play.

30 cameras, and they are all crystal clear, in frame-by-frame slo-mo, on everyone's 60" TV's. Add in the "power" of social media, and people can find a place to bitch about anything. Replay cameras pick up a single piece of black rubber flying up from the turf to determine if a receiver got his foot down inbounds.

People have spent 50 years romanticizing the "immaculate reception". If that play had happened last Sunday, would have taken about 15 seconds to determine catch/no catch from 6 angles of replays.
