Why do the 49ers get a pass for not drafting Mahomes over Thomas?

It gets back to revisionism. According to most/many/all scouting intelligence at the time, he wasn't worth a no 1 pick. Or no 2. Or no 3. And so on.

Even the Chiefs didn't know how good he was. That's why they let 10 other teams possibly take him first including the team they traded with.

At least they drafted a HoF quality player.

Passing on the kid is one thing but the really telling story is how the Philly GM called Andy Reid in the run up to the draft and got encouraged to go after Jalen Hurts since Kansas City clearly didn’t need a quarterback.

Mahomes would have won by 60 if they swapped rosters. He lost his best receiver and played on one leg.

It’s telling that Reid and Brett Veach can spot quarterback talent beyond 1/1 perhaps better than the rest of the clowns in the NFL.

As Brick likes to refer to it, the draft where the Bears drafted a QB who went on to have a slightly above average season for one year before becoming a journeyman backup for the rest of his career.

What's up, Brick :P

Lmao I saw two very competent teams. Mahomes is a smart player, but also how bad was his injury really? He busted off a 30yd run and his leg was still attached and he kept playing.

Imagine how badly Nagy would have broken Mahomes. We'd then be saying "WHY DIDN'T WE DRAFT (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky!".

It's interesting to think of Mahomes in Chicago - would he shine or would we corrupt him forever. But the Nagy being the root cause of (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky's failures narrative loses credence each year (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky doesn't start. The league has spoken and in a way Nagy was right about him. Truthfully, and it sucks to admit it, Nagy was also right about Fields (so far).

There aren't many that revitalize careers after the first stop fails. Maybe you become Alex Smith or Ryan Fitzpatrick but that can take time.

I think Alex Smith is a different case, no? He remained a competent game manager type QB for most of his career iirc.

The one person that comes to mind is Tannehill. But since there are so few examples I'd say that just reinforces the correct call the original teams made on these guys, that they weren't stars or game changers or anything like that.

Alex Smith is the only bust that really worked himself into a player that at least justified his initial pick. It's actually interesting to see how much worse Smith was in SF than (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky was in Chicago.

I think it's more likely that it is incredibly difficult to overcome being a high pick on a team and having it fail there. You either make it in your first job or you have very little chance of making it as anything more than an average starting quarterback.

I disagree. If you ruin a guy, he doesn't usually get an opportunity to resurrect his career as a starter. That doesn't mean that the original team was right, it's a product of the league moving on to the next thing. It's unlikely Geno Smith figured things out this year. He was just given an opportunity out of necessity.

(Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky was never going to be as talented as Mahomes. His ceiling was good starter, and he needed a lot of development to become that after 5 games starting in college. Nagy misused (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky and essentially admitted to being the cause of Fields losing his confidence. But he helped Mahomes cheat on a test, so all is forgiven.

Pace drafted a Pro Bowl QB. He did his job

Successful organization, tough to knock their strategy.

True. They passed on Mahomes and traded 3 first round draft picks and other picks for Trey Lance. They probably would have won at least one Super Bowl if they don't do those things.
