I'll bet he'll be fine.

Quote:
The sportsbook account was opened under the name of an associate of Rodgers, the sources said. Approximately 100 bets were placed on the account over an undisclosed amount of time, including on Colts games, the sources said. Most of the bets were in the $25-$50 range, although there was at least one low four-figure bet.

Man, that's nothing. Let the guy have a hobby. Is he going to throw a game because he has $27.50 on it?

Addiction makes a man do crazy things. Wager amounts shouldn't make a guy exempt from a lifetime ban IF the integrity of the sport matters.

Betting on your own games is a bridge too far.

I'll be surprised if he doesn't get at least two years. No matter what he gets, I'll be very surprised if another team ever signs him.

The fact that they have fully endorsed/embraced gambling?

It has fully embraced gambling to the point that books are present at some of the stadiums. It's pregame and in game announcers openly discuss point spreads. They display fantasy stats on their broadcasts for, not just league players, but draft kings types who are making day plays.

There are technological blocks they could put in place to ensure their players can bet without damaging the integrity of the game but they seem more interested in regressive suspensions rather than progressive measures. It's like they are pretending this is the 1970s and their hands are clean.

How could you possibly have a system where players are betting on games without impacting the integrity of the games?

require all bets to be announced to the league office

Unless they are booking through Knuckles and Tony at the corner bar, they could eliminate player gambling if they wanted to, or design a safety system any way they wanted with full compliance by the books

As dolphin said, do it like stock purchases/sales are for guys like Elon Musk. You still have to ban them from betting on their own games though.

State governments were opening the floodgates for gambling. Sports leagues could have kept pretending they weren't aware it existed, but they didn't. Instead, they created another revenue stream that also benefits the players.

There's also technology available to circumvent any measures put in place by sports leagues. The leagues, teams, and agents educate the athletes about the restrictions. Ultimately, all leagues have fines and suspensions to deter players from gambling on the sport they play in. This kid saw a star player get suspended for a year for something less egregious than betting on his own team. He has no one to blame for throwing away his career.

You can't.

Deals can still be cut with other players that could impact the outcome of a game. Wealthy guys have been caught doing this already. The money is too much of an allure.

The logical thing to do is to let the players make publicly accessible bets on any game they aren't playing in that routes through an official partner. It would actually be pretty cool to see that Justin Fields just put $1,000 on the Lions to beat the Packers.

Also, players’ access to one another across the league is too great to pretend they’re not privy to inside info.

I could see allowing them to bet on their own teams to win. Nothing else.

That's why the only way to do it is to make the bet information immediately public. It's like the injury report.

No, because nothing is really like an NFL injury report.

NFL and integrity should never be in the same sentence. Especially when you consider the backgrounds of some of the leagues founding fathers. Who are often HOF members held in high regard.

The illusion of integrity has to exist. Allowing players to bet on their own games would destroy that. Ban this kid for life and hope the other idiots figure it out.

They can be shit humans but no sport can survive if the games aren’t played on the up & up.

Goodell is a piece of shit but his main responsibility should be to be absolutely ruthless if anybody fucks around like this.

Yep. This should be done in a way that would make players piss their pants. You can't fuck up a money printing business for a clown.

If the NFL could barely get rid of Snyder and still have largely useless leeches like the Fords, Browns, McCaskeys and both New York team owners, this goof is a relatively small problem.

Until 20 years ago I would've included the hapless Saints owners as well.

Besides, you can see cheats on the field. And the money press is for the cheats and assholes in the owners' boxes. Same as college football. You can only pretend it isn't to enjoy it.

No one is arguing that the NFL is on the level. The illusion of integrity keep fans watching, fattens the pockets of players, makes owners billions, and makes makes the NFL's partners write UNPRECEDENTED checks. That changes if players are allowed to bet on their own games.

We saw what Stern did to protect the league when thr Donaghy scandal happened. He was ruthless. I'm sure Donaghy wasn't the only ref to throw games, but Stern couldn't allow it to come to that.

The sportsbooks share information with the NFL's security team.

Let's say you're in the NFL like this guy, you have a friend or cousin create an account and you give em 5k to put in there. How could the nfl or any sports book ever connect those dots.

I think that’s what he did more or less. Funny how some blame the poor old white owners for this kids troubles. The past is littered with white guys being banned for being stupid. Shoeless Joento Pete Rose to the NBA and college refs.
