Just implement 4th and 20 from your own 25 as the "onside" option and be done with it. No punting allowed that play.

get rid of onsides altogether and make it a single play 4&20. or some distance that historically gets converted at a slightly higher percentage than onsides kicks are recovered right now.

rule would have to have a way to deal with penalties. if the defense committs a penalty that typically equates to an automatic first down that doesnt mean a successful try. it would mean they try again but it's only 4&10

Leave it as it is, or just get rid of the onsides and play football. Team is down 9 with a minute to go, sorry, you lose.
5.2% converted in 2023 feels like about what it should be. It's a "hail mary" type play.

Admittedly I'm super happy since it makes the Bustin Fields cult look even dumber, if that's possible. No one is turning down the chance to acquire a 25 year old QB on his rookie QB if he's any good, and Fields isn't good. The market has spoken: Fields is a bust. Sorry, LTG.

They become potential trade partners if they fail to retain their quarterback. The Vikings organization wanted to trade up for Fields a few years ago, and the Buccaneers aren't in position to trade up for a quarterback in the draft.

I still think Cousins will return to Minnesota, and the Falcons and Steelers will bid on Fields.

RB FA list: saquon, henry, pollard, ekeler, swift, josh jacobs, JK Dobbins... and some less heralded names like gus edwards, mattison, singleterry, CEH, aj dillon, antonio gibson, zack moss. would appear to be a buyers market even more so than usual

I've thought a 3rd+ was the likely market, so it doesn't bother me. I'm still hopeful that it'll be more. That said, if the Steelers stick with Pickett, I don't think Tomlin will be the coach after this season. Other than some late game magic, Pickett is a far worse QB than Fields. I think they're in the game as well.

i dont see how that makes kickoffs more exciting. and surprise plays are the heart of this game. theyre word salading a way to protect players more.
