2024:

Not a lot of quarterbacks that were complete busts. Most of the players on this list had great or productive careers. Someone can fact check me, but I counted 28 Super Bowl rings and 7 Super Bowl appearances by players that didn't win a ring.

He's the great outlier.

I think Carr and Couch are the only legit busts. Winston is still better than some starters today despite being a backup.

Your point though is solid. There's some pretty solid overall 1 busts, like Couch or Leaf, but overall #1 qb have a solid record.
None of that matters though. What happened in the past. I generally dismiss trends wrt stuff like that.

David Carr, Alex Smith, Sam Bradford, Jameis Winston, Baker Mayfield, Bryce Young all busts in the last 25 years..that's quite a few

There's a wide range of bust in there.

JaMarcus is only a bust by the complete idiocy of the Raiders, but he has to be the worst. He should’ve never even been drafted. Rohan Davey and Matt Mauck were better prospects.

Baker Mayfield just took his team team to the playoffs and advanced.

I missed him and Bradford.

They also gave him a $115M contract. Alex Smith was a solid pro that made a Pro Bowl. I thought Bradford's problem was an injury. The jury is still out on Young, but it's not promising.

But the pick is a bust because he was awful for the Browns. Anybody could have signed Baker Mayfield this offseason

He wasn't awful for the Browns. He was a productive version of Zach Wilson. MANY of his teammates hated him and the Browns stupidly traded for Watson.

He wasn't great. His numbers were Fields like in Cleveland

No, he led a team that had won like 1 game in 2 years to a playoff victory. He gutted out his final year there with a shoulder injury and still threw for 3k yards.

There are tiers to those 1/1 QBs.

Sometimes a QB goes first because they’re considered the best player at the position (e.g., Goff). Other times they’re taken 1/1 because they’re no doubters (e.g., Luck). The latter are rarely busts.

Fields is more talented than Luck and Manning combined.

Winston is the only one of the latter that recently be considered a bust. He was really productive but couldn't stop throwing as many interceptions as touchdowns.

Shade thrown at Tracey Lawrence and JaMarcus Russell, not even worthy of a bold font.

Last 25 years

1/1 QB selections are 0-3 in Super Bowl appearances for the teams that drafted them.

0 Super Bowls won for the drafting team among 18 QB's taken 1/1 overall in last 25 years.

3 one-and-done SB appearances on the wrong side - Burrow/Bengals, Goff/Rams, Cam/Panthers

Alex Smith may not have won a ring as a starting QB, but he is not a bust by any means.
7 playoff starts with 2 different teams, 199 passing TDs, and 35,000 yards in his career. The Bears all time leading passer has 23K yards and 154 TDs

Bryce Young has played a grand total of one NFL season. Still has time before you can call him a bust, though he is not off to a good start.

Jameis Winston nearly threw for more passing yards and touchdowns in one season than Fields has for his entire career. He's considered a bust by MANY because he couldn't cut back on the interceptions.

18 times in the last 25 years NFL teams and their fans came out of draft day after selecting a QB 1/1 thinking We're goin' to the Super Bowl! and not one of those teams who drafted a QB 1st overall has won a Super Bowl with that QB.

3 teams have had the joy of losing a Super Bowl with their 1/1 QB.

Bryce Young ever gets anywhere near the playoffs or wins a Super Bowl it will be with a team not owned by David Tepper.

Burrow might still get it done; but he could also end up retiring early due to his chronic injury issues, like Luck. Or the Bengals make the Super Bowl with Burrow injured on the sidelines while Jake Browning QB-cucks his way to a Super Bowl, a la Earl Morrall and Bob Griese.

So what QB are you drafting this year?

I wouldn't draft any of em with 1st overall. Fine to take most any of 'em further down the board. Six of one, half-dozen of another, or whatever folksy saying Phil Longo used to describe this QB class.
