I still take Brady or Manning over either. Rodgers is probably number three, but I can come up with a lot of names before I hit Vick.

I accidentally voted for Chris Johnson instead of Andre Johnson. The difference between him and the second best WR (probably Fitzgerald) is bigger than the differences at any other position, and obviously Fitzgerald is really good.

Defense is harder. It's not Julius Peppers though.

Harrison.

Also, this poll kind of confirms my theory that people only really watch the Bears and half-assedly follow the rest of the NFL.

Maybe. Not crazy to think so.

Yeah, I agree going forward. I doubt he's able to do that again. And the way he plays is risky injury wise.

Looking at approximate value it was Matthews in the NFC and Foster in the AFC

Thats like football's version of WAR right? It must be cummalitive though because Rodgers and Vick are not in the top ten.

Approximate Value

1. Arian Foster*+ · HOU 20
Clay Matthews*+ · GNB 20
3. James Harrison*+ · PIT 19
Julius Peppers*+ · CHI 19
5. John Abraham*+ · ATL 18
Tom Brady*+ · NWE 18
7. Jamaal Charles*+ · KAN 17
Haloti Ngata*+ · BAL 17
Philip Rivers* · SDG 17
Matt Schaub · HOU 17
Sebastian Vollmer · NWE 17

IB who are your acceptable answers for each side of the ball?

I've never heard of approximate value.

I don't think any are completely crazy. Tuck is awfully borderline. I don't think I could ever consider a RB the best player because they are so dependent on their line, and I think AP is near or at the bottom of the listed players. Freeney should probably deserve to be on the list though he's on the downside of his career. Most of the answers are "acceptable," but the voting skews are just way off. Julius Peppers is the runaway best player on defense in the NFL? So much so that no other players are even close? That's craziness.

Vince Young and Kenny Britt aren't nobody. They weren't all pros but it wasn't Rex Grossman and Darius Heyward-Bey either.

Not real solid. Kind of in the beggining phase, but like the term says its a good approximate value

Have you seen some of the backups in the NFL? Hell, have you seen some of the starters? He's a headcase, but he's also 30-17 with some reasonable statistics along the way. He's a borderline starter.

I'm skeptical. Sounds like it works better across years than in individual seasons.

I think the games that Rodgers (concussion) and Vick (kolb start) played in sparingly hurt them because its divided by 16.

It also favors winning QB's a little too much according to the creator.

vince young is 3rd on the depth chart in philly...that kid from northwester mike kafka is ahead of him...vince had great run game and good line, good defense..of course his record is good but if he was a top 20 qb that team goes to the superbowl

He's third string right now because he's a dope that has had three weeks to learn the playbook. In a normal offseason he'd be a backup somewhere, or a starter on a bad team. He's better than some current starters.

One really good year does not make the best player in the NFL.

I agree, which is why I'm glad this thread was authored now and not a couple years ago. I never said Vick was, just surprised more people didn't vote for him. Rodgers has now proved beyond any type of doubt he belongs on any short list in this argument.

these days, i'd agree because there is more concentration on WR's and the passing game. but players like barry sanders, oj simpson, jim brown...they could've been considered among the best players in the nfl at the time they were dominant.

A lot of old people do consider Jim Brown the best player ever.

Of course, those people must have been in a coma from 1975-1987.
