As first reported by Ralston Reports, Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis will be in Las Vegas tomorrow to meet with Sheldon Adelson, the mega-billionaire owner of Las Vegas Sands and numerous casinos. According to a memo from UNLV President Len Jessup, there will be a big gathering on land that UNLV recently bought:

I have been notified that the Las Vegas Sands plans to publicly announce its support for a new special events stadium in Southern Nevada and they believe the 42 acres of land on Tropicana Avenue that UNLV Recently purchased is a prime location.

Correspondingly, the Sands leadership team let us know that officials from the Oakland Raiders are scheduled to travel to Las Vegas and tour locations around the valley for a potential new home and they have asked us to meet them at our 42-acre site on Friday morning to answer questions about that site.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Sands is proposing to build a billion dollar, 65,000 seat domed stadium on the site to house UNLV’s football team, that will be ready for any potential NFL team.

glorious but will never happen.....? ? ?

when the white sox move to vegas there is some somewhat of a thematic unity with raiders. do it!!!!!!

This would be pretty great but it won't happen for many good reasons($$$) for the NFL.

Leaving the wealth of the Bay Area for the land of foreclosures is astronomically stupid, which is why Mark Davis will probably try. The endgame on this whole Raiders thing is pretty clearly to squeeze the Davises out and get Larry Ellison in. If the NFL wanted them in Los Angeles or out of Oakland, they would be.

It would be great for fans though.

More money in California though.

Agreed, Curious Hair is thinking about the welfare of billionaires while us football fans are thinking about ourselves.

Yeah, because Oakland is so awesome. I can't wait for my next visit to Oakland.

Vegas is the ideal location for a domed football stadium. Vegas holds events that'll populate the other 357 days of the calendar for the stadium. Oakland will get shaken down for hundreds of millions for 8-10 games a year.

I don't give a shit. Oakland is where the team belongs. If Las Vegas wants a crappy team with a crappy owner and a crappy stadium and no Super Bowl wins since the '80s, they can have the Bears.

Well, that area already has a team.

My point is that "awesome place to visit" is not the only thing to think about

I agree that the Raiders belong in Oakland. You cant recreate that shit somewhere else.

I, with my deceased wife's parents and my daughter took the Amtrak California Zephyr out to Oakland (Emeryville) this last summer. We arrived the day before the Golden State Warriors victory parade and watched it from the 19th floor of the downtown Marriott. Lake Merritt was pleasant to get the day's running in and the BART to San Fran was quick and clean. Dinner and shopping in Jack London Square was nice as well. Granted Oakland itself was only part of the whole experience but I enjoyed my stay.

There aren't really any benefits to most fans with Oakland. There are plenty for Las Vegas.

The Raiders weren't even in Oakland for a long time.

40+ years in Oakland other than a torrid 12 year affair with L.A.

Look, if you need to take a team out of there, fine. But dont name them the Raiders. The Raiders and the Black Hole etc is Oakland

At the end of the day, this league is on its way out anyway so who cares

If Vegas is such a great place to build a dome with its 350+ events a year, then I guess they don't need an anchor tenant, do they?

The Raiders are the coolest team in the NFL. They're so cool that I'm a Raiders fan without even watching football, which I don't enjoy; I just love the Oakland Raiders as an abstract concept. Go to Las Vegas and the whole mystique is gone. I want the Raiders playing in an abject shithole, not some hospitality house for Entourage-loving pricks of the other 30 NFL towns to come rolling in. VEGAS BABYYYYY VAY-GISS! VAY-GISS! VAY-GISS!

Aren't there parts of Oakland that feel like a real city and not just a post-apocalyptic hellscape? With everyone getting gentrified out of San Francisco, it would have to follow that Oakland would start to get a little better.

I agree with this. But reality is they're going to get a new stadium.

Might as well be in a place where a billionaire is going to use his own money instead of the public getting shaken down.

I'm going to forward this to the NFL office. You are the demographic that they can't afford to lose.

The league is going to give them extra money to build in the East Bay, right? Between that, new cash-flush ownership, and not having to go whole-hog on a place that will seat Raiders fans, they should be able to get this done at little to no cost to the taxpayers.

vegas is fool's gold. almost as bad an idea as an nfl franchise in london. i think goodell wants to single handedly destroy the NFL. he must be JORR's best friend.

I view the Raiders as kind of a wandering caravan across the desert West. Let them set up shop in Vegas for 5 years and then they can move somewhere else. NFL fans and Vegas fans are a strong match, so it could work.

Wandering? They've only ever played in Oakland and South Central. Not really a desert. Maybe a food desert.

I go to Oakland 6-7x/year for work these days because two of my analysts are there, and I've been going to either Oakland or Berkeley pretty steadily since 1992.

Oakland is a lot better than it used to be. There are a number of middle-class neighborhoods, and a even a few upper-middle class areas if you're into older (pre WWII) housing and not McMansions. There are better restaurant choices in neighborhoods away from downtown, and downtown is acceptable for what it is.

I don't think that Oakland is a worse city than Cleveland or St. Louis. That being said, I still stay in San Francisco and take the subway over.

The Coliseum, however, is the 2nd worst non-domed pro stadium I've ever been at. The worst? Jack Murphy/Qualcomm in San Diego.

I would have been fine with the Chargers or the Rams (or the Jaguars) going to Las Vegas. But the RAIDERS don't fit in Las Vegas.

The type of people who live in Vegas are basically the same type of people who are fans of the Raiders, in general. It makes a perfect road game destination for fanbases of ALL nfl teams because not only do they see the game, but they get to go to Vegas, too. The dancers at the tailgates will kick your teeth out.

One main question is, why the fuck does UNLV need a billion dollar football stadium?

I like that the Raiders have spotted the Bears like 12 years and counting of utter worthlessness and are still a vastly superior franchise. dat rap song tho
