My first thought was he saw somebody else dive at it and he thought the ball might deflect towards him.

The second thought was he didn't feel like it.

Will that one play define his career?

The "analysis" regarding this incident in the coming weeks is going to be 100x more irritating than the fellating of peyton manning.

I thought him falling into a heap on the sidelines after Denver's final TD was far more telling than the failure to dive into demarcus ware.

That's probably true, but it's also kind of deserved. Watching the video clip, it seems pretty inexcusable. I'd be pissed if i was one of his teammates and saw that.

I don't think they even scored yet. He fell to the ground like child throwing a tantrum on the defensive holding that gave Denver a 1st down

Is it possible he thought it might bounce up and he was instinctively positioning for that?

For whatever faults he has, he's not afraid of contact.

I haven't looked at it extensively though

I can't buy that excuse, though. He's not a fucking idiot. Even if the ball was going to ricochet, you still dive on top of it and it still bounces up into your stomach/chest. I've heard all the possible reasons/excuses, and it seems pretty clear to me that the simplest explanation is also probably the most accurate. He was getting his ass kicked the entire game and saw Ward coming in just ready to blow him up, and he opted out.

That's it and should be the end. Except there are going to be at least a dozen think pieces about "What This Means for Cam Newton" in the coming weeks. It will also be brought up every time he is upset on the sideline until he wins a Super Bowl, and if he does win one it will only be because he overcame whatever personal failures people are ascribing to him right now.

I can't wait to see if Cam is able to change his attitude and overcome this adversity.

watching live I questioned what he was doing. it just didnt look like the normal response to seeing the ball on the ground.... was he trying to just pick it up and keep the play alive but was surprised when ware stretched his arm out to corral it in?

I'm sure in the coming days and weeks his team will have time to come up with a well crafted response when he is inevitably asked about it again...

Live I thought it looked like he was ready to kick it out of the Denver Guy's hands, but on the replay that sure wasn't it.

My initial reaction was that he was trying to sell it as an incomplete pass (and diving for it would have indicated that he knew it wasn't).

No. The call was gonna be what the call was gonna be. Him diving for it or not was not gonna change the refs minds. Obviously, since it was ruled a fumble without him diving for it. YOU DIVE FOR IT. And he could have gotten it. He was the favorite to do so.

yeah, no one's afraid of contact--until they are. Cam's running yards all/almost all came in the 1st half/2nd quarter. I don't think he had any run/scramble yards in the 2nd half at all. Very strange.

He did take some solid hits at the end of those 1st half scramble-runs. But I thought/even posted in the game thread that if Carolina were within a score and in 4 down territory at the end of the game, Cam would start scrambling again in 4 down offence and march down the field to victory:

Quote:
Unless Broncos put up some more points, Panthers win but do not cover. Figure Cam's good for a TD in 4 down offence at the end of the game. So they just need a FG and
to keep Denver from scoring again...and then Cam does his scamper, scamper, long pass, scamper, TD! thing. viewtopic.php?f=90&t=98634&start=125#p2411655

why that never happened, no idea. maybe the beating cam took in the 1st half and the sacks in the 2nd half made him not wanna lay out and take hits. weird time to go jay cutler.
