I don't know why they didn't fire him. It's like conduct detrimental to the team type stuff, you'd trade or suspend your own player for this. Maybe they're afraid of a lawsuit. I also haven't read up on all details but I didn't realize the woman was also involved with someone who works for team.

To paraphrase good dolphin, you'd see at least 100 people downtown a day as attractive as she was. If she was "convenient" sure, but not hot enough to risk your job over.

There seems to be a few issues.

They "knew" of the relationship since July. It became an issue recently with the claim that he made an inappropriate comment to the person in the organization.
It seems to coincide with a relationship between a VP's wife and him. Was the supposed inappropriate comment just an excuse to get him for that?

I would guess they are hoping to work out a buyout and move on from everything but he could make things very difficult on the Celtics if he wanted.

It's really starting to look like that. Not that it lessens the stupidity of his actions. But "unwanted comments" seems like a really flimsy basis for firing him now. Or making this a public matter. It'll be easy to start rooting against Boston again, so there's that.

These types of relationships rarely become public. They knew who his fiance was and the backlash he would get for cheating on her. They leaked the story in a very messy way to humiliate him. They could have just fired him. That's ultimately what they're going to do in the coming weeks.
