The NBA just officially announced a $94.1 million salary cap -- and an $84.7 million salary FLOOR per team -- for next season

Now in an age where your 7 and 8 players are 10 million guys.

NBA lockout was pro-owner from the general public, pro-player from the diehards. NHL lockout was pro-owner from the diehards and the general public doesn't give a shit about the NHL.

Why were NHL diehards pro-owner?

Because they tend to be stupid. For a lot of people, it's seen as a violation of The Hockey Way to do anything but eat shit nonstop, and not immediately acquiescing to significant paycuts is stepping out of line. For fans of low-revenue southern teams, any sort of rising inequality that necessitates a lockout means their team is on the ass end of it and therefore support whatever Bettman wants to do to fix it for the owners, and by extension them.

As for the NBA lockout, even the diehardest of the diehards weren't guaranteed to stand by the players. I seem to remember Bill Simmons musing about how great it is that Really Smart People screw athletes in negotiations. And to think Dan Bernstein didn't know who the guy was!

I have a feeling Durant will go to the Spurs. The money is pretty much the same and he has a Texas connection. He will lose millions because of taxes if he goes to the Warriors or Clippers.

Slightly better than 80 million for Ryan Anderson. I think.

Its almost like you have to divide everything by 2 to put it in perspective to past years.

That's the point, though. No one is saying they gave Brian Scalabrine that money... but they gave the biggest contract in league history to a guy who is above average.

I'm fine with mocking the contract. It's ridiculous. I was just pointing out it's equally ridiculous to label Mike Conley a "shit player" and throw him in the same crowd as Mozgov.

This is the post I was responding to:

These contracts are ridiculous. Shit players making way to much damn money. Just today: Noah, Mazgov, Conley to name a few. The NBA sure loves bad money.

NBA would be more interesting if you had hard cap with no limit on how much you could pay a player. If you want to give Lebron 75 million of your 94.1 million in space go for it.

Agree they need to end the max contract crap. The truly elite players have complained about it previously. Hard cap coupled with this would serve as a market correction for what we are seeing now.

I bet that is music to the ears of Goff and Bernstein. Nothing like providing validation for incessant Twitter talk.
