the only recent/ish one that i vaguely remember was blake griffin jumping over a car to dunk.... of course it was a KIA cuz official sponsor of the NBA. oh and then dwight howard put on a stupid superman cape one and ummm.... did he dunk two balls? or was it just a big dude in a cape?

while i grew up romanticizing the fuck out of the dunk contest, what with MJ [even tho dominique beat his ass the next year] and of course spud webb, the pumps, "baby jordan" harold miner, and uhhhh.. fuck. i think it all died with vince carter cuz that was pretty much the apex of all the athleticism+technicality-bullshit dunking stuff we'll ever see, right?

then they started giving dudes like ~45secs or maybe even 2mins to go and miss a bunch of dunks and hope they get one to be like OHHHHHH DAMN. so basically, shit, have i missed the 3pt contest already?

Bullshit. Dominique didn't beat his ass, he kept doing the same fucking windmills over and over again. First off, Jordan and Nique are two completely different kinds of dunkers, Nique is more about power and Jordan is more about grace. Jordan is great off of two feet or 1 foot and Nique is mainly a two foot dunker. Aesthetically speaking Jordan and Vince Carter are the two greatest dunkers ever.

They had hours and hours of stupid pregame stuff, including a talent show where Shaq, Kenny, and Chuck, voted on Devin Booker's ping pong skills or Ron Artest's rapping ability -- but you get rid of the Shooting Stars competition? It might have been silly but at least you had NBA veterans/hall of famers who participated in it. Chance for youngsters to see and learn about NBA history.

For my money, Vince Carter was the prettiest dunker I've ever seen.

I'd agree that Vince is the prettiest/smoothest dunker ever, with Jordan coming in at #2. Jordan as an offensive player has the prettiest, most aesthetically pleasing overall game.

Yeah, remember when it was gonna be Vince vs Jobe for the next decade? Vince's overall game fell short.

Carter is clearly superior, as is Michael. Wilkins was awesome but he had a limited repertoire compared to Vince and Jordan.

Best dunker ever has to be a big guy, since they are closer to the rim. I'd go with Shaq

The contest has gotten too gimmicky.

The dunk contests haven't gotten any worse. It's just that, like the HR derby, it's an event that appeals to children. Of course it gets more boring as you get older. I don't think I've watched one in 5+ years at least.
