How? This is what made me post this. The place where I saw it everyone picked Wilt except a guy who picked Bird because it's Black History Month.

The guy dominated a bunch of stiffs for a good chunk of his career. It would be like me trying to guard Shaq in his prime.

That works too.

Bird or Wilt can be replaced by anybody else on that list for at the very least equal value, if not considerably more.

Except that's wrong. He played against more Hall of Fame centers than anyone.

Wilt played against a lot of great players. The problem with his insane stat totals for some years is that he played basically every minute of every game, and the pace of play was so ridiculous compared to the last 20-30 years that it's impossible to compare things like PPG. It would be like him getting 7 ABs a game where modern players get 4.

The modern fan thinks Dwight Howard is a superstar. He wasn't even as good as Clyde Lovellette. The average center that Wilt went up against was about 6'11", guys like Lanier, Bellamy, Thurmond, Reed, Kareem, Russell, Pettit, Hayes, and on and on. This idea that he jumped center against 6'4" white guys with their Chuck Taylors tied together is ridiculous.

And just for Regular Reader, Wilt absolutely crushed Bill Russell. He averaged about 29 and 29 against him head to head and dominated the boards.

Nobody thinks Dwight is a superstar. He had one superstar year.

Wilt definitely didn't dominate Russell on the boards heads up. They have very similar rebounding numbers against eachother. Wilt got more points, Russell got more wins, they both were happy with that.

A lot of people think Howard is a superstar. I saw a list the other day that had him ranked the 16th best center of all time or something like that.

As for the rebounding, I don't believe that's correct. From Bleacher Report: Russell played head-to-head a total of 142 times. In those matchups, Wilt averaged 28.7 PPG and 28.7 RPG. Russell, on the other hand, averaged 23.7 PPG, and 14.5 RPG. Wilt crushed him. But it helps to have seven more Hall of Famers on your team.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock into that, especially not to the point of ascribing it's content to the beliefs of an entire generation of fans. You can find almost anything on the internet. The other day I saw some goof arguing that Shaq was a better player than Michael Jordan.

Yep, I was wrong about that. I thought I remembered their rebounding being close and a big disparity in ppg, but it was the other way around. Still, you know you are overstating how good the Celtics were and how bad Wilt's teammates were, especially after 1965. Just look at the 1969 season and Finals.

He played in a league that only had like 8 teams. The guy played against the best of the best and even rule changes couldn't slow him down. He didn't play against midgets
