Was talking to a friend last night, he's 24. Somehow we got on this question, what percentage of 18 year old sports fans would recognize a picture of Wilt Chamberlain from his playing days? I said 50-60%. He says 10%. I think his number is insanely low, obviously.

Probably lower than 10%

We're talking about guys who consider themselves sports fans. Not just any random 18 year old hipster dipshit. I don't believe that for a second. Young people aren't that oblivious

I'm older than that dude and if Chamberlain were alive today and walked past me in the mall I don't think I'd recognize him.

If it was him holding the 100 sign I would. Otherwise probably not.

Sports fans or NBA fans?

My son is 17, knows every NFL player from the last 20 years and he wouldn't know Wilt Chamberlain from Neville Chamberlain.

Unless there was a Madden-level video game for the NBA.

Now admittedly Atlanta is a shit sports town, but back in '89 I ran into Doc Rivers in the biggest mall there one Saturday afternoon. We had a brief conversation and he mentioned that he ordinarily went everywhere and that people usually didn't recognize him. Fortunately he was laughing about it. And that we were getting strange looks talking shit about the crappy food options there even though we were in the food court.

I once attended a "kids fest" at the Rosemont Horizon about 25 years ago or so. I spotted a post-football Wendell Davis with his family. My wife heard he was a celeb and bothered him for pictures. He was very nice and he took a pic with both my kids.

My friend's kid is a big SJW. On his 21st birthday his old man and I went up to his school to take him out drinking. The kid was an RA so he had the nicest room in the dorm. He had a poster on the wall of John Carlos and Tommie Smith on the medal stand at the '68 Olympics. I struck up a conversation about the poster and the kid thought it was Jesse Owens. Hey bro, try to Social Justice better.

5 percent of kids can identify the vice president.
10 percent can identify iowa.

I feel like I'm in a modern-day episode of Card Sharks.

Jim Perry: We polled 100 18 year olds and asked if they would be able to identify NBA all-time great Wilt Chamberlain in a picture from his playing days. How many said they would be able to identify him?

Contestant #1: I don't think too many 18 year olds from any era would recognize a professional athlete, all-time great or not, who played 50 years before they were born. I'm going to say 20.

Crowd: Higher! Lower! Leery is in the hallway!

Contestant #2: I'm 32 years old and don't know who Wilt Chamberlain is, so I'm going to say that number is going to be lower. 10.

Jim Perry: The number of 18 year olds who be able to identify NBA all-time great Wilt Chamberlain in a picture from his playing days is...2. I drive a Pontiac Grand Prix with a red pleather interior.

I'd go with over 15% because 20% of the US population are probably his kids.

One day I'll regale you with stories about the Showtime Lakers in Atlanta. How there weren't a dozen kids made on that two night stop still amazes me.

And that I lost two sure things to Big Game James still is a helluva laugh.
