Actually provides a rationale for the Griffin trade.

You see, they had to trade Griffin because of a modified vesting mutual penalty exception clause.

Teams are going to have to be much more judicious going forward with how they dish their money out. In essence you can't miss on a guy. That is one of the reasons that the Bulls traded Butler. When you hand out Supermax money you'd better make sure that it is a Super Max guy. Age will factor into it also. If you miss it will set your team back for years.

It is why Amare Stoudamire was constantly referenced in the Carmelo thread. You can't tie up 20 million into a guy and essentially get nothing out of him. It hamstrings the franchise. This isn't baseball where you eat the salary and attempt to replace him. Anthony took the heat for not winning anything and Stoudamire essentially skated criticism free.

If you have a terrible contract on your books you aren't winning anything. J.R. SMith Tristan Thompson and Shumpert's contracts are killing them right now. 50 Million dollars tied up in 3 bench players. Can't win like that.

You can't just get this sort of analysis anywhere.
