Looks like it's going to be more interesting than first thought. First thing, I wish good health for both

Wemby -350
Chet +350

Wemby 19.3/ 9.5/ 16.2 PER/ -0.3 WS
Chet 17/ 7.8/ 22.1 PER/ 1.9 WS

Wemby has taken 40 more shots than Chet at 42.9%, has a 3.9 TO rate to Chet's 2.1. Chet's FG % is 56.5%

What are the odds on the first one to get a crippling series of stress fractures?

Vicky can't be ROY on a 16 win team. Can't happen.

Popovich highest paid coach in the NBA at $16 mil a season. $80 mi / 5 yrs.

Monty Williams 2nd highest paid coach in the leage at $13 mil a season $78.5 / 6 yrs

both coaches in the first year of those deals

28 games played out of 82 34% of season played

16 mil * 0.34 = ~$5.5 mil
13 mil * 0.34 = ~$4.5 mil

Spurs have 4 wins, Pistons 2

10 mil / 6 wins, paying Monty and Pop ~$1.7 mil per win so far this season.

If he is the best player in that class, why not?

What is the win total needed to be able to win it?

Agreed. If the stats are anywhere close, the nod has to go to Holmgren. Unfortunately, Carmelo Anthony didn't get that consideration when he led the Nuggets to the playoffs as a rookie.

They knew back then that he would never crack the first round

It has happened, 2014-2015 Timberwolves went 16-66 and Wiggins picked up ROY.

Year | Team | Record of ROY winning player
--------------------------------------
2004 Cavs 35-47
2005 Bobcats 18-64
2006 Hornets 38-44
2007 PDX 41-41
2008 Seattle 20-62
2009 Bulls 41-41
2010 Kings 25-57
2011 Clippers 32-50
2012 Cavs 21-45
2013 PDX 33-39
2014 Sixers 19-63
2015 TWolves 16-66
2016 TWolves 29-53
2017 Bucks 42-40
2018 Sixers 52-30
2019 Mavs 33-49
2020 Grizzlies 34-39
2021 Hornets 33-39
2022 Raptors 48-34
2023 Magic 34-48

rarer is a player on a winning team given the award. 2018 Sixers with Ben Simmons providing the best analogue to Chet winning it on this year's likely to be around 50 win OKC team. + Chet and Ben Simmons both had a red-shirt season. Jason Tatum who finished 3rd behind Simmons/Donovan Mitchell now considered the best player from that NBA class.

Wiggins benefited from a weak-sauce rookie class; beating out Mirotic on the Bulls at the time who finished 2nd to Wiggins in ROY voting. then Nerlens Noel; Elfrid Payton; Marcus Smart (maybe among the top 2 now); Josuf Nurkic and tagalog hero Jordan Clarkson

ok. I am not saying he will be or should be the ROY. But if he is the best player and it is evident then no matter there record he should get it. It is not a team award.

dayum, somebody get coal under the tree this christmas?

Hey, I want Chet to win over the frog. Team America all the way. But I think Wembanyama's a level above Chet in the long and even not so long term. and the sports-writers who vote on these things don't like being on the wrong side of history, even it's only a marginally lesser side down the road.

Pop's been changing things up with lineups. Maybe Wembanyama, who is currently only keeping pace with Chet, will take off in the 2nd half of the season and run away with it.

that's probably the closest to the Chet/Victor matchup. Melo had almost identical numbers to slightly better numbers than Lebron and Melo's Nuggets made the playoffs, going 43-39 to the Cavs 35-47. But Lebron finished ahead of Anthony in ROY voting. Lotta season left, but hard to see the Spurs in a competitive Western Conference getting to 20 wins let alone 30+.

He is objectively right now not better than Holmgren. He's put up almost 1/3 more shots and his PER isn't even close.

After 17 seasons as the Spurs shot doctor Chip Engelland signed on to the OKC staff as an assistant coach during the 2022 off-season. OKC went from last in the league in 3pt% in 2021-2022 season (32%), prior to Chip's arrival, to now 2nd in the league (~39%). Chet no doubt worked with Chip from the moment he arrived at the Thunder. Chet getting drafted in late June 2022, Chip showing up on OKC a month later. Lu Dort's gone from 33% on 3's to 41%; Isaiah Joe from 33% pre-Chip to 42%...up and down the Thunder's lineup they've improved.
