No. Points represent a successful possession. Assists simply describe an action that occurred during the possession. We could just as easily create a "rebound that lead to points" statistic but it would be similarly non-descriptive because it's not the important part of the equation.

Even the best teams score on less than 50% of possessions.
I'll let FavreFan rip this apart but I think you are wrong. 17 teams have an offensive efficiency over 100, which means that they score over a point a possession. I'll let you guess how a team can shoot under 50% and score over a point a possession.

Here are the rates for this season with the teams Rank in Wins in parentheses

4 Oklahoma City (2nd)
5 Miami (3rd)

Top 5 Assists leaders

1 Denver (13th)
2 Chicago (1st)
3 Boston (14th)

1. Chicago (1st)
2. Lakers (7th)
3. Minnesota (15th)
4. Indiana (6th)
5. Sacramento (27th)

League record in parenthesis.

I thought the argument was rebounding rates (what I posted) vs Assists?

Rates are always a better indicator than totals. A team can get a ton of rebounds if they give up a ton of shots and possessions.

Teams that outrebound their opponent win more often than teams that out assist their opponent.

Well, and I'm sure FavreFan can help me out because he knows about it but there are other measures such as true shooting percentage which indicates that it's highly likely that there are at least a few NBA teams that get a point in at least 50% of possessions.
immessedup17 wrote:
Obviously, a 3 pointer made on 1 possession...and 2 turnovers would be a '100' using that efficiency calculator.
Yes, this is an example of how they could not. However, making one out of two free throws would have the opposite effect.

If I had to wager, I would predict that the Heat score at least 50% of the the possessions they have since they are scoring at a 107.9 rate.

I didn't have much of a choice so I watched the 76ers-Celtics game yesterday and Turner looked really good. Now, I know this was probably his best game as a pro but he was scoring in the flow of the game pretty easily.

I was waiting to see who would post about this....

I agree though, he did look really good. Also bear in mind only his 2nd start this year. Yes his first start was rather disastrous. But, while one game certainly isn't evidence of much, it does show given minutes he can produce. I think another positive thing about him is even in the games he doesn't score or plays only 20 minutes, he still contributes elsewhere- rebounding, passing, steals.

In 5 of the 9 wins they have Wall has scored 13 or less.

It's really pathetic that the Lakers lost back-to-back games to the Pistons and Wizards. That's a whole lot of bad right there.

What are his assist numbers in those games?
About what he normally does.

See, that's why i don't know how some people like Barkley can be so dismissive of a team like the Wolves making the playoffs. 3-8 place are separated by 3 games. there's going to be a lot of fluctuation. The Lakers as you said just had 2 bad losses, the Clippers lost to the Nets last night...meanwhile the Wolves have had some solid wins. nothing is really assured.

I'm glad I decided to hold off on my "So Evan Turner is basically Landry Fields?" post.

His scoring average in wins is still about the same as losses.

Turner is having another huge game today and there's still the entire 4th quarter left to be played
clearly he needed to get an opportunity and get consistent minutes which he now is

I didn't see it, was watching the UNC/FSU game, but I'm gonna make it a point to check out some Philly games this week.

Evan Turner is on pace for by far the highest defensive rebounding rate for a guard in NBA history.

It's possible I'll end up owing you a full apology. If that's the case though I won't duck it like BD and Bills. I'm gonna check him out this week.

not that it really means much, but I do think they've emerged as the 3rd best team in the East
Pacers have faded, Knicks are imploding, Hawks still without Horford...and even if the Magic do keep Howard can't see them doing anything either

I'm not sure Philly can beat Orlando in a 7 game series if Dwight is motivated. It all depends on how they shoot I suppose but Philly certainly has the better long term outlook. I would really love to see a Philly/Indy playoff series. Outside of maybe a SA/Dallas matchup that could be the best first round series.

philly won't beat any of the other top teams in the east. they could beat the pacers, the hawks, etc...as i think i said somewhere else, they'll win 1 playoff series if they get the right matchup, and that'll be it. they still need to grow.

i think they'll win their 1st round matchup for sure assuming they have home court. i don't think they can beat the Bulls or Heat either in 7 games, but it would not be a pushover

Troof be told, I'm still more worried about the Pacers than the 6ers in the playoffs.

The Pacers will goon it up just like last year, but will ultimately be defeated. I'd like to see them draw the Heat in the 1st round and hopefully rough them up a bit.
