I think Kevin Durant would have a lot to say about Melo being the "best scorer in the league".

Not talking in PPG I'm talking about how effortless it looks.

You're better off being ignored. Carmelo is the best scorer in the game and a top 5 player and Deng is a nice 3rd or 4th option.

Best scorer in the game? His shooting percentage is far worse than your other 'Top' players. Durant, Lebron, Wade, Kobe...those 4 right there are far better scorers than Carmelo. How can you argue a statistic like shooting percentage? If Deng and Carmelo both take 20 shots a game, Deng scores more points...he has a consistent three point shot in his arsenal.

Ugueth Will Shiv You wrote:
Maybe I am just being nitpicky, but I am having difficulty following your logic on Melo. How can he be a superstar and a poor shooter? He may be poor on defense, but the kid can put the ball in the hoop basically whenever he wants.

Regardless, I do agree with your clarification on Deng with the Bulls vs Melo with the Knicks.

Again, field goal percentage. If he can put the ball in the hoop basically whenever he wants, why does he only do it 45%. In the last month, their field goal percentages have become very close...with Luol still shooting slightly better. For much of the year, he was shooting in the low 40% area. Luol Deng was the more "efficient scorer" in that time period.

edit: Nas, how many shots do you expect Carmelo Anthony to get if he were on the Bulls? How many compared to when he was the main (only decent) scoring option on a nightly basis? 4 or 5 less shots?

Well you can look at the FG% of any player in the game and say what they will do if given X amount of shots. Doesn't mean that it's right. Melo is a 46% career shooter. When looking at scorers you have to take into account how they score their points. Are they shooting a lot of wide open shots? Can they create their own shot? Are they having to put up a lot of bad shots to bail out their team? Are they they primary scoring option?

Carmelo Anthony isn't even the best scorer in his conference, East or West.

The last time Melo had any real scoring help (like Amare will provide) he was shoot 48% or 49% for 3 seasons in a row.

Who are "they"

You?

People that watch basketball games for a living. People that are sports fans. People that know something about the NBA.

This is actually a pretty hard argument because we won't really know if Melo can score as well anymore without a solid PG or secondary scorer (who Billups can be on occasion). Durant has Westbrook, so they cancel each other out using that same logic (which also goes against my original thought). However, when you look at Kobe, LeBron, and even Wade prior to LBJ... all three were able to be "the guy" without anyone else helping out.

And yes, I realize Kobe and Wade had Shaq at one time or another.

With all of that being said, I still cannot find reason to believe that Melo is even in the same category as any of the three men listed above. And, we still won't know because of A'mare and Billups.

Kobe has Gasol/Bynum/Odom. MJ had Scottie/Grant/Kukoc. Great scorers always have someone else around to help take the pressure off. They're still the guy but they can take a possession off here and there.

Then why has this debate been kept secret? People that watch basketball games for a living usually discuss it. Sports fans definitely do. The previous two categories represent the third category.

If Durant, Kobe, Wade, LeBron, and Anthony are in a poll discussing who is the best overall scorer, Anthony takes fifth. Sorry.

And as long as Deng makes $11M and Anthony makes $22M, Deng is the better value as a scorer. There are salary caps and teams to worry about. Sorry.

As recently as the all star game they were having this debate on air. Anthony finished no worse than 2nd. Also by your logic when it comes to salary Korver is a better option than Kobe. He's averaging nearly 10 points and makes 20% of his salary.

If I may, that is an entirely different argument altogether. In that example, Korver would definitely be more efficient in terms of dollars and cents in comparison to Kobe.

At some point the value of an elite player is negligible when it comes to how much it "should" take to keep him on the team.

Luol can't put the ball on the floor though. You can't run weak side isolation with Luol because he can't create his own shot and doesn't really have a move. Melo can basically score on anybody in any situation.

You guys are aware that immessedup is on record stating that he just says things and doesn't really mean them right?

This is clearly one of those cases.

plus, your touting of Deng tells me you haven't watched many Bulls games this year. His numbers are decent but he has cost them plenty at the end of games with his various gaffes

Why do the statistics not show he is 10x better? Why do they not show that Carmelo is even 2x better?

According to a stat I saw on ESPN's BottomLine ticker, the Knicks gave up more than 53% of their offense to get Carmelo Anthony in this three-way trade with the Nuggets & Timberwolves.

Even though the Nuggets & Nets initially agreed to a trade before the NBA All-Star Break late last week, I'm convinced of 2 things. First, even though the Nets have one more season at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, Anthony used the Nets for leverage and had no intentions of signing an extension with New Jersey/Brooklyn. Second, as absurd as this may appear, I think Carmelo's wife, ex-MTV VJ LaLa Vasquez, played a behind-the-scenes role to force the Nuggets to trade him to the Knicks. After all, LaLa wants to increase her own profile, not to mention do a great deal of shopping when not watching her man alongside Amare Stoudemire at Madison Square Garden.

For the record, the Bulls have 1 more meeting in the regular season with the John Ratzenberger (Cliff Claven)-looking Mike D'Antoni and the Knicks. That's not until April 12th in New York...

What's odd about IMU's comments is I've been one of the biggest Deng fans around here. I've been mocked for my annual Deng love. Even with all the meatball in me I can't create an argument that says Deng is anywhere near the player Melo is. It's insane any way you look at it.
