Uh oh, not looking good for the Metropolitans. Another loss to Washington tonight, coming off getting swept by Philly and the all mighty Aaron Rowand. NY overnight radio was already in a frenzy after last night's loss to the Nationals. Paul LoDuca was really pissed in the postgame, mad at his teammates and sounding defeated.

Another Philly win tonight puts them 1.5 GB in the East (currently tied at STL)

Final, Philly wins in 14, lead is 1.5 GB. Funeral going on at WFAN with Yankee fans dancing on the grave

I think the Mets can pull it out, but that pen is terrible

Funeral on WFAN tonight. First caller is a Mets season ticket holder, says he burned most of his playoff tickets, saved some to burn at the stadium before the game tomorrow. Now he's just dumb, but yeah.

Losing ugly to real bad teams

And Mets fans wonder why we hate them so. Send me the playoff tickets. I will gladly burn them in front of Ron Santo.

All tied up Torch.

I look forward to more reports from WFAN. I heard Chris Russo this morning comparing this (I believe inaccurately) to the 1964 Phillies' collapse. He also said Randolph's job is safe. Willie was one of my favorite ballplayers when I was a youth, so I hope this is true.

Please let me know if these topics are addressed this evening.

Thank you.

I think the Phillies choke was worse. If memory serves, the lost something like 12 of 14 during the last two weeks and lost seven games in the standings in eight days. I'm sure it feels like that to the Mets fans.

I absolutely agree. That was my point. For a great recap of this Phillies collapse (along with a nice discussion of Brock-Broglio), read October, 1964 by David Halberstam (sp?).

I would, however, skip the World Series portion of the book. That part was lousy.

Mets down 7-1. Looks bad for them. The flags at ESPN are at half mast.

Maybe not--don't they get to broadcast a one-game playoff?

Randolph shouldn't be fired. This was one of the biggest chokes ever, but if they fire Randolph, they better get used to last place. He is the only voice of calm out of everyone on their team. That includes so-called professionals like LoDuca and Alou. They were WAY too dependent on Pedro Martinez to come back and save them.

I do think Santo did toss a little something toward Beelzebub to finish this one off.

I feel bad for the Mets fans, but man, I wonder if Willie is regretting his 'oh well, the champagne will just taste sweeter when we do clinch' comment a week ago.

There's this guy on WFAN overnight (Sommers) who is basically the Mets version of Murph. I guess he goes way back with the station and there's a lot of Swieca like love for him from some of the callers, but he gets real annoying to me. Anyways, I remember around the all star break where he guaranteed the Mets would be playing in October and the Yankees would be fishing. This was after a loss to Atlanta, trying to calm down some Met callers. He went on to tell the fans to look at the competition, that the Mets were easily the class of the NL. Oops.

It ain't over til it's over http://www.nypost.com/seven/08262007/sp ... _east_.htm

I think Minaya will get more heat. I don't see Willie enough to comment on him, but I will give some credit to Ozzie in 05, when the Sox were struggling and Cle was charging, he took the heat off the team with his "I will quit if we win it all' proclamation. It's funny because our Sep wasn't even that bad. But sometimes you got to be creative, and I know Willie gets ripped for not being the loud crazy guy, so I can see fans calling for his head.

His team also seems to have problems with acting immature with stupid mistakes and showing people up. I watched them more closely these past weeks and I saw multiple 3rd base SB attempts with 2 outs. Doesn't seem like there's a lot of control in that clubhouse with LoDuca speaking out like some controversial outcast with no real leader in there.

Several of the NL teams could have been helped simply by taking Contrearas off the Sox hands. The mets have enough money that the 2 years remaining on the contract could have been absorbed. They could have had him for nothing. Fuck them and Minaya for the lack of foresight.

Minaya needs to be shit canned. It's inexcusable for team with that many resources to blow a lead that big.

Come on, Minaya did a great job of acquiring Latino players.

I am sure the Mets fans with pitchforks and torches storming his house hastened his decision.

Pitchforks, maybe. Unfortunately, the discovery of fire hasn't quite made it to every part of Queens.

I hear Prometheus was a Bronx native.

You have to do a little brushing up on your Greek Mythology, Mr. Coach Crapowski.

According to legend, it was actually Zeus who lived on the top floor of a 3 story walk-up on East Tremont Avenue in Throg's Neck. From here, of course, he could survey with safety all mortals who dared approach him from both the East River and Long Island Sound.

After the wily Prometheus (who lived, at the time, in Bayonne) crossed into Queens and then The Bronx via the Throg's Neck Bridge and stole fire from Zeus, he was exiled by Zeus to Massachussets, where he spent the rest of eternity being forced to write speeches for an endless stream of Kennedys.

Did you know that with decreasing demand from the Kennedys, Prometheus went back to selling fire? He based his operations in Chicago, where he first supplied large amounts of it in the mid-80s-early-90s to now product endorsement pimp and cartoon character known as Da Coach. In the new millenium, he latched on to a new client, a fearless centerfielder with uniform number 33.
