Both of these guys got signed for near predicted market values. Both were interested in the Sox. Both signed elsewhere.

I'd be almost as angry as I was about Machado but I'm anesthetized to the pain now.

Hey, that money will be spent...on some no talent kegger.

You look at their off season moves this season and they amount to about $45 million for a big pile of shit. That is almost two years worth of Harper.

Nobody is gonna pay a 34 -37 year old Harper 25 million a year for 3 years. It's a much better deal than 8-250

The Sox should sign Dallas Keuchel.. probably get him for four years @ 75 million.

Frankly I don't remember why I didn't initially care for him, probably how obnoxious his entire crew and dad were until he was called up. But I do think that he's wildly overrated. And I had no use for this dog and pony show, his agent, and by extension, Manny as well.

So Boras says he wanted to be in one city and all that....but is he really going to be happy in 5 years making 25 million a season if more guys are getting more than him? That 13 yr no opt out deal sounds good to him now, but will it in the future? Still seems crazy to me.

Sounds like the Cubs really didn’t have a chance ever.

He would look good in Left for two years and move him to first base when Rizzo leaves.

Theo dropped the ball when he signed Heyward, Darvish and Chatwood. He obviously did not want to sign Harper.

Now we get to watch Heyward and Darvish not live up to their contracts while Harper and Arietta push for a World Series.

Whenever I hear about one of these huge contracts I recoil, but the actual results have not been as awful as I thought they were. I pulled a list of the biggest contracts in MLB history that were signed at least three years ago (so we can have some perspective). Here it is:

1. Giancarlo Stanton, 2014, 13/325 (a rough patch with injuries in 2015 and 2016, but so far so good)
2. A-Rod, 2008, 10/275, (three good years, then he fell off the cliff)
3. A-Rod, 2001, 10/252/ (insanely good performance for the seven years he actually played under this contract)
4. Robinson Cano, 2014, 10/240 (solid performance)
5. Albert Pujols, 2012, 10/240 (two good years, the rest were middling or awful)
6. Joey Votto, 2014 10/225 (so far so good)
7. Prince Fielder, 2012 9/214 (two good years, the rest were awful)
8. Max Scherzer 2015, 7/210 (excellent so far)
9. Derek Jeter, 2001, 10/189 (eight years were solid to great)
10. Joe Mauer, 2011, 8/184 (two good years, the rest were pretty bad)

So four (A-Rod II, Pujols, Fielder, Mauer) of these mega deals were pretty bad, three (A-Rod I, Votto, Scherzer) were pretty good, and three (Stanton, Cano, Jeter) were solid. That 40% disaster rate is not good, but you've still a got a better than 50/50 chance of the contract being at least decent.

Reduce the list to 26 year olds who signed those contracts.

I was reading that he and his wife want to have kids and its important to them they not move the kids around.

I think it's possible, that this was a 330 mill over 10 deal and the Phillies asked for the extra 3 years so they could lower the cap hit (they all see the luxury tax as a salary cap now)

Regarding this and your earlier post... Outside of money I do not get why he would not want to have his family and so on for 13 years in Chicago. Especially with his buddy on the other side of town. That is besides the 330M guaranteed.

As for that I can completely see there being a wink and nod that he will only play 10 out of 13.

Harper's deal with the Phillies expires after the 2032 season. That seems like a lifetime away. But throughout that lifetime, and on the four July firsts that follow the end of the Harper megadeal, Bobby Bonilla will arrive in Flushing to pick up his annual seven figure check.

Nothing wrong with Chicago. Im just saying from all the report it didnt seem like the Sox were a top choice for him.

Not guaranteed that Bryant will stay here.

Arietta is basically done unless he goes on the Roger Clemens diet.
