Rafeal Palmiero once one a gold glove as a firstbaseman in a season where he was a DH in something like 120 games.

Well I mean if the guy was clearly cheating...

Sosa's Wins above replacement: 59.5

That list is curious

Pujols is 2 spots ahead of Frank
Chipper Jones is ahead of both of them.

So basically these guys are all more valuable than Frank.

If he was clearly cheating, then it was clear he was cheating during the days baby bear fans were slurping up his schtick.

Yeah they ate it up. He duped Cubbie Nation (grandmas, fratboys, and business men taking siestas)

He also kinda said fuck you on his way out and was a jerk the last few years.

Its not surprising that they turned.

For Sandberg, which of these can you take an 8-10 year strech of his career and say that he put up numbers that were among the very best in the history of the game at any position? Because you can do just that for 2 of those when it comes to Frank Thomas.

Well he was always gonna hit for average. Generally between 290 and 310, averaging something like 175 or so hits a year. Also, he was generally tops in fielding for that time frame. He had some speed too. Several +30 SB seasons, even one with 54. So I'll take Fielding and Hitting for average with a Speed kicker.

So you are telling me that if you had to pick between Ryne Sandberg and Frank Thomas in their prime that you'd pick Sandberg?

Sandberg is my favorite Baseball player of all time. Yea I know he's not "the" greatest of all time, but he's my favorite & as a Cubs fan, yea I'd pick Sandberg over Frank. I know Frank was great but I would rather have Ryno on my team that the biggest douchebag asshole athlete that Chicago has ever seen, Frank Thomas.

Nice attitude dick.
If statistics were the truth of worth, then the Cubs would have won the world series by now. Since games are actually played on a field, statistics do no fully define a players worth, particularly when said statistics only encompass 50% of the game. Do you know what the VORP is or do you just bleat "Statistics!!!" when it's convenient?

You don't want the superior hitter because he wasn't a nice guy? Ryno was my favorite player growing up as well. I played 2nd base in little league and thought he was god's gift to baseball when I was in grade shool. Being an asshole didn't work out for Reggie Jackson or Pete Rose either I guess. Except, of course, they won multiple World Series.

Frank Thomas > Ryne Sandberg 10 times out of ten.
Next.

Not a big fan of the big hurt, but I'm not sure he's even in the team picture on this one.

I'll take this as an answer that if you could only have one of the two that you'd rather have Sandberg over Thomas.

Do you also think Gordon Beckham is a better BASEBALL player than Albert Pujols?

Dude, if I'm in the National League, yeah, I take Ryno.
If I'm in the American League, and don't need an infielder, I take Thomas.
This is not an apples to apples argument.
No, I think Bacon is overrated anyhow. Albert also plays his position pretty well. And will most likely for years. I don't think Frank would have had that in him.

OK... 5 tools, tell me who's best in these between Thomas and Sandberg. Fill in the blanks please.

Running Speed:
Arm Strength:
Hitting for Average:
Hitting for Power:
Fielding:

Frank has the edge in everything but fielding and speed.

I love Ryno, he was one of my favorite players as a kid. But this is not even an debate. Greatest baseball players I have personally seen in Chicago:

1a. Frank Thomas
1b. Greg Maddux

2. Ryno

Thomas was one of the best right-handed hitters of all time for a decade. Those numbers are epic and not "artificially induced". His later years diluted his career statistics. But, I'd take those 10 years versus just about anybody elses.

I'm one of the few guys here that love both teams and I grew up watching both. I've never seen a right handed hitter hit the ball like he did his first 11 years. I love Ryno but there is no way I take him over Frank unless I have a team full of Bonds and Pujols at every other position but 2nd base. Even then I would have to think hard about it.
