I saw the anti-pussification of America yesterday. At a gathering, there was a bee hive in a bush, which happened to be right next to the table where the food/drinks/etc. were placed. Probably 6-7 kids grabbed a bunch of Solo cups and went in full-on bee hunting mode. A couple kids were stung, but the kids just stayed there and trapped/killed as many bees as they could.

Bees or wasps? Cus we need as many bees as possible to stay alive at this point in time.

Hopefully they were able to wind down with a big bowl of peanuts and some soft drinks.

I don't want my kid to fight bees but I want other kids to fight bees for my enjoyment.

I got stung by a bee yesterday. First time that has probably happened in 15 years. Nuke them all!

Natural bee colonies are being killed off by the rise of the commercial migratory bee-keeping industry. Truck-loads of bees are carted around the country and parked in areas where farmers needing pollination services request and pay for them. They head out in February from Florida and work their way around the country til they return to Florida for the winter. Not unlike the old Ringling Bros circus:

I have read that wild bee colonies aren't being killed off at all. The issue is with the commercial hives that are transported. There is some thought that the bees become weak due to pollinating just a single crop for weeks/months on end and then are susceptible to disease. It would be like if you only ate chocolate for a whole month and then only ate steak for the next month. Additionally, some of these GMO crops with built in pesticides might be having an effect.

GMO seeds/crops need to be banned. The downside to GMO gone wrong -- total devastation of the world's food supply, is far too great for the limited amount of upside; which limited upside already comes at the cost of Monsanto controlling the distribution of GMO seeds planet-wide and raising the prices far above comparable non-GMO seeds; and then fucking with anybody who doesn't play their game.

I agree. Whose bright idea was it to allow living things to be patented? Patented seed can't even be avoided. It's like a fucking virus that invades your crops even if you aren't using it and then Monsanto comes calling.

according to some professional "apiologists", the traveling bee trucks might be traveling petri dishes of bee-killing diseases and fungi:

Quote:
Unfortunately, some apiologists — honey bee scientists — suspect that the rise of the bee-trucking industry may be contributing to the species' decline. A United Nations study from earlier this year found that industrialized hives create ideal breeding conditions for the pathogens and fungal diseases that may be killing the bees. Transporting the hives from farm to farm then spreads the pathogens to local bee populations.

Additionally, I'd think that it could be a recursive thing where one guy brings in the commercial trucked bees, they do their thing and that "starves" out local bee pops. You can only support so many bees per acre on natural bee-food supplies (whatever the hell bees eat, Sonic?) . Next year, couple more guys bring in the trucked bees, or they flag em down at their neighbor's. Rinse. Repeat. Commercial migratory bee industry booms, local colonies--natural and maintained--go bust.

Prolly a combination of factors; but hard to discount the migratory bee industry; or to know all the ways it messes with native/local bee colonies.
