He won't feel out of place on the Cubs then.

Yes but it’s a small sample size. He only threw 25 innings because of an ankle injury. He has a 3-1 career k-bb ratio.

When does he plan on making his decision?

I'm not sure he has to pitch every fifth day his first year. He's probably going to be on an innings limit given the longer season (20 starts in NPB vs 32 starts in MLB). Let him do the Ted Lyons Sunday Starter deal, and adjust the #4/#5 starters accordingly. When the #1 starter is supposed to go on Sunday, which should happen about every 4th start, skip his start.

Why Sunday? More often than not, a Sunday day game is followed by either a Monday night game or a day off. More time to recover. Let him play the field Tue/Wed/Thu, pinch hit Fri/Sat.

He will get 23-24 starts, probably a half dozen Travis Wood 1-2 batter relief appearances while playing LF, and get about 65 starts at LF/DH and 35 PH appearances for about 300 PA.

Seattle. If Ichiro was anywhere other than Florida, I'd say "wherever Ichiro is."

He said he isn't interested in playing with other japanese players.

I've seen straight up bums go to Japan and hit like Barry Bonds. I doubt this guys bat is anything special.

Seattle seems to be the most aggressive. Both LA teams make a lot of sense too.

I guess I would want to know what his goals are in the MLB. If it is to have an easier flight home Seattle makes sense. Otherwise why?

Word is he wants to play for the Cubs for free.

Seattle has a large Japanese population and the Mariners were owned by a Japanese Company (Nintendo) who I think still owns a small percentage. Plus it makes sense on the field as they can really use him in their rotation. All that said and he could just as easily end up on the fuckin Yankees.

Sources briefed on Ohtani cutdown tell me "heavy West Coast" flavor to final list. #Cubs a possible exception along with SEA, SF, SD and both LA clubs.

The Rangers and Cubs are the only non-west coast teams he's going to meet with. Seattle, San Fran, San Diego and both LA teams are on his list.

Otani's translator is Hideo Nomo's son. Nomo works in SD's front office. Otani's former trainer works for SD.

MLB executive just told me that Theo and Jed are pulling out all of the stops to impress Ohtani. “Theo and Jed are being incredibly creative with their pitch. They’ve thought of everything. And I mean everything. Still going to be tough to land him but they are in there hard.”

Sounds like Dan Bernstein. Theo and Jed are really really smart like this!

Given what I've read, I would put my money on the Angels (with a small backup bet on the Mariners.)

Theo needs to rock a Hory Kow shirt to the meeting.

I was originally sold on him going to the Angels but the Padres are right up there too. I did not realize he is related to or mentored by hideo nomo and he works for the Padres. No pressure there and I don't think there is single team that plays in more pitcher friendly stadiums than the Padres when you factor in their along with LA and SF.

If this kid wants to be THE MAN, then leading the Padres legitimately to the WS (as opposed to stealing an extra home game in 1984) would be right up there. And the Padres young GM just got extended to 2022.

Ohtani’s meetings today: #Cubs (per sources); #Mariners (per @RyanDivish); #Rangers (per @Evan_P_Grant). That would leave #Padres and #Angels, presumably for tomorrow.

Always bet on the Rangers and Angels to spend too much money on someone so that they look busy.
