Who the fuck is Mariano Rivero?

Sox beat him twice in the ninth when he came in with a lead while I was in attendance. 2000 and . . . can't remembah the other year. Herbert Perry scored the run in 2000, I think.

The unanimity? Or him getting in on the first try?

For me the the unanimity. I mean he did just one thing well. So many hitters like Ken Griffey JR and MANY others did up to five things well.

I'm glad he got in this year because I feared his chances would have nosedived.

He did that one thing great in the regular and postseason for many years. Best closer ever in terms of effectiveness and longevity.

Great great player, but no way should he be the first unanimous one. Mays, Ruth, Aaron and others did not get 100%....

Shouldn't be the first, but he does deserve to be one. Maybe this group of voters said FU to that tradition.

Hopefully Bonds gets in eventually.

This Ruth and Aaron weren't unanimous, therefore no one should be unanimous thing has got to stop. Obviously Ruth, Aaron, Mays, etc. should have been unanimous, but they weren't. It doesn't mean you carry forward those mistakes into perpetuity.

Rivera was obviously a lock, Martinez and Halladay were solid choices, Mussina on the other hand....He doesn't really pass the gut test for me.

That’s a complaint with the HOF voters not with Rivera. Glad they’re finally coming to their senses on players who should be no doubters.

It isn't a complaint against Rivera. He is a no doubt 1st ballot HOFer.

Of all the crusty cranks who vote in this, how was there not one crusty crank who still thinks only starting pitchers should be eligible? What progress we've made.

Exactly...it feels forced, as though they were all told they had to vote for him. Are the ballots public now? Maybe they felt they would be shamed more now than in the past.

Again, I have no personal prob with Rivera being first ballot or even unanimous, but it seems fishy based on historical voting. Have the holdouts been primarily NY writers? Seems like Jeter could be the next unanimous one.

Schilling should be in before Mussina, imo. You just cant ignore the absolute DOMINANCE in multiple post seasons.

Agreed...I think the NY factor I referred to (as well as Schilling's political views) influenced that. Schilling absolutely belongs before Mussina. No question.

Rivera doen't bother me. Someone had to eventually be unanimous and in the end the hold out a vote thing was stupid. A dumb staus of one HOFer being more HOF-y than another.

Mussina was just a consistent great pitcher to me. So many times I hated him on the mound against the Sox. More should be in before him though as many said. I also hope he is an Oriole right?
